Scouting Report on Jay Smith

by Mike Farrell - 06/20/2006
Smith is raw but has excellent athleticism. His ball skills are very impressive, he’s fast down the sidelines and he has good size. Smith is one of the best downfield blockers in the country as well, a trait often overlooked. He’s active even when the play isn’t designed for him and hustles downfield to help out his fellow wideouts. He’s strong when it comes to adjusting to the football and can make acrobatic catches. Didn’t catch many balls as a junior but made the most of each possession. He’s a redzone threat and has tremendous body control which allows him to handle contact while going up for the ball. Smith has big hands and snatches the ball well. He’s not afraid to do work over the middle and plays a physical brand of football. His ceiling is very high.
