Scouting Report on Deonte Thompson

by Mike Farrell - 06/19/2006
Thompson has blazing speed and adequate size, a combination that makes things tough for cornerbacks in high school and translates well to the next level. He’s a physical receiver off the line and is aggressive when the ball is in the air, but his track speed is what separates him from others. Thompson needs to work on his shiftiness and open field elusiveness but when he gets a step on a defender it’s over. Thompson is a downfield receiver but has the potential to be dangerous on wide receiver screens and reverses. Thompson has excellent ball skills and is a difference-maker when he’s in a groove, but he needs to be more consistent and stay in the game even when not being utilized. He’s a solid downfield blocker and an advanced route runner for a high school receiver. Thompson has good field awareness and a good feel for the sidelines. His speed allows him to sell the deep route easily and he’s good at planting and coming back to the ball. Thompson won’t be a big yards-after-catch guy right away in college but he’ll stretch the field and will force teams away from man-to-man.
