Scouting Report on A.J. Johnson

by Barry Every - 05/31/2010
  • SpeedDivision I Player
  • SizeBlue Chip
  • StrengthBlue Chip
  • AgilityDivision I Player
  • Lateral PursuitDivision I Player
On the Hoof: Johnson looks more like a strongside defensive end than a linebacker. He is physically reminiscent of Prince Shembo from the class of 2010.
Needs Improvement: Johnson has a tendency to play high at the point of attack. He will need to stay lower and become the attacker, not the attacked. He also needs to improve lateral quickness by improving flexibility in the knees and hips if he intends to play linebacker in college.
Most Impressive: Has the perfect size to play linebacker or defensive end at the next level. His body type is very versatile, and he could be used on most special teams. Johnson has the heart of a lion and never gives up on a play. He will pursue the ball all over the field. There is no doubt that he thrives on contact, and that is something you can't coach.
Conclusion: I believe that he will be given a shot at playing linebacker, but like Allen Bailey at Miami he will end up with his hand on the ground. Those schools that passed on him because of mobility issues will regret it, because Johnson will overcome that with his tenacious attitude on the football field.
