Which Team Was in Better Shape?06/22/2002 Devils Illustrated

Shelden-close-FPNow that we know Duke will be without forward Mike Dunleavy for the 2002-2003 season, it's time to move forward. The only problem is that moving forward inevitably means looking back to the 1999-2000 season. That was the first year Duke had been stung by the early entry bug when National Player of the Year Elton Brand, Williams Avery, and Corey Maggette all left early for the NBA. Compounded with the transfer of Chris Burgess, the team's expected starting center the following year, those Blue Devils relied on a freshman class consisting of six freshmen. This year's Blue Devils have also lost three players to the NBA Draft, including the National Player of the Year and will rely heavily on six freshmen. TheDevilsDen.com takes a look at both classes and offers analysis and an opinion on which team was/is better off.
