On the Hoof: Fits the mold of the spread defender at linebacker. He has an athletic build but not an overly muscled-up body. Will be slightly undersized at the college level.
Needs improvement: Must get bigger physically to allow him to take on lead blockers on the college level. With his ability in space, Benson can complete the full package with more physicality in a phone booth.
Most impressive: Benson has been starting at Texas power Cedar Hill since his freshman season and predictably, he possesses and has developed great football instincts. He reads and reacts very well. Plays great in space, runs well and tackles in the open field. Benson is a big hitter and explosive as a tackler.
Conclusion: Because of his experience playing football at a high level and his instincts, Benson is the type of prospect that can contribute early on at a major college program, at least in a special teams capacity. As he matures physically and adds weight to his frame, Benson could be the type of player that is a three-year starter and four-year contributor.

Barton Simmons is a Football Recruiting Analyst for Rivals.com. He was an all-state performer for two-time state champion and nationally ranked Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy in high school and was a two-time All-Ivy selection as a safety at Yale.
