Winthrop 27, Georgia Tech 65
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP)—Alex Montgomery scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 25 Georgia Tech to its fifth straight win, a 65-27 victory over Winthrop on Thursday night.
The Yellow Jackets (9-2) allowed the fewest points in school history in the game at the Bahamas SunSplash Shootout.
Georgia Tech limited the Eagles to four points in the first 8:34, taking a 37-14 lead into halftime, then held Winthrop (4-4) scoreless in the first seven minutes of the second half.
The Yellow Jackets made 15 of 21 field goals in the first half, the second-best percentage for a half in school history, and finished the game shooting 24-for-44 (54.5 percent). The Eagles made only 11 of 45 field goals (24.4 percent). Georgia Tech also outrebounded Winthrop 37-15.
The Yellow Jackets broke into the Top 25 poll this week for the second time in 15 years and the first time since Jan. 21, 2008, when they ranked No. 23.
Jacqua Williams added 13 points for Georgia Tech.
Ashley Haugtvedt led Winthrop with 10 points.
