HONOLULU (AP)—Georgia erased the disappointment of the previous day with a big victory over Santa Clara.

Cori Chambers and Tasha Humphrey had 18 points apiece to lead the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs to an 87-68 win in the third place game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday.

Humphrey had a double-double, pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds for Georgia (4-1), which lost to unranked Texas Christian on Saturday.

“We bounced back from a disappointing loss, and that’s important,” Georgia coach Andy Landers said.

Despite a distinct size advantage inside for Georgia, the Lady Bulldogs’ backcourt of Chambers, Sherill Baker and Janese Hardrick combined for 50 points.

“We had to go with four guards and our guards did a good job at times of running the basketball and of running the offense,” Landers said.

Santa Clara kept it close through the first 20 minutes, and pulled within two points in the opening minute of the second half before the Lady Bulldogs went on a 21-8 run to take a 61-46 lead. The Broncos got no closer than 12 down the stretch.

Santa Clara also lost to No. 13 Michigan State on Saturday.

“We showed a lot of positive signs,” coach Michelle Bento-Jackson said. “I thought we competed, and definitely to play two teams of that caliber this early in the season is going to benefit us later on.”

Georgia outrebounded Santa Clara 45-30, including 18-9 on the offensive boards.

“We knew we didn’t rebound well as a team (Saturday),” said Baker, who tied her career high with 10 rebounds. “The guards especially had to come out and rebound because our post was getting trapped and triple-teamed.”

Added Bento-Jackson: “As much as we were keeping the big kids off the boards, we had to remember to keep the guards off as well.”

Ashley Graham led the Broncos with 18 points.
