STANFORD, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) —Second-seeded Texas will look for its first bid into the Elite Eight since 1990 when it takes on sixth-seeded Minnesota in a West Region semifinal game Sunday at Maples Pavilion, the site of the Gophers’ second-round upset of Stanford.
Since a loss at Kansas State on January 25, Texas has reeled off 15 straight victories, including an impressive roll through the Big 12 tournament and convincing wins over Hampton and Arkansas in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
Heather Schreiber scored 20 points in the victory over the Razorbacks and Stacy Stephens continued a standout postseason with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Minnesota returns to the same court where it surprised the field with a victory over the Cardinal on Tuesday. The win at Maples Pavilion advanced the school to its first “Sweet 16” in coach Pam Borton’s first season.
A balanced attack led by Corrin Von Wald’s 19 points and solid foul shooting down the stretch keyed Minnesota’s win, breaking a 26-game winning streak for Stanford at home.
The two schools have not met since 1978 when the Longhorns topped the Gophers, 114-53.
