San Diego State cracks Top 25; UConn still No. 1

San Diego State cracked the AP women’s basketball Top 25 for the first time in 14 years, while Connecticut remained a unanimous No. 1 for the 18th consecutive poll.

The Aztecs are ranked No. 23 but will have to prove themselves quickly to stay in the Top 25 with games this week against No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 20 Oklahoma at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

The Huskies, meanwhile, received all 40 first-place votes Monday from the national media panel. They have been the AP’s top team the past 27 polls.

The first nine teams remain the same after going a combined 19-0 with a 27-point average margin of victory last week. The only game in single digits was Notre Dame’s 68-67 win at then-No. 21 Michigan State.

Stanford was No. 2, followed by No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 North Carolina and Notre Dame. Tennessee was No. 6, followed by LSU, Baylor, Xavier and Duke.

Connecticut breezed through the week with a 25-point win over then-No. 10 Texas followed by an 87-34 rout at Holy Cross. The Huskies have won their three games this season by an average of nearly 50 points. UConn is home for the next month, with a showdown looming against Stanford on Dec. 23.

San Diego State is one of five ranked teams set to play in the Paradise Jam.

“Without question, this tournament and our tournament at the end of the month will be a challenge,” said San Diego State coach Beth Burns, who was coaching the Aztecs when they were last ranked in 1995. “It’s November and we’ll know a lot more where we stand after this upcoming week playing three really good team.”

The Aztecs have four of five starters back from last season’s team that won 20 games for the first time in 12 years. They finished 24-8 and earned their first NCAA bid since 1997.

“We’re excited, as when you’re a young program, anything that gives your team confidence and reinforces and validates the direction you’re going is a good thing,” said Burns.

Texas A&M moved up four spots to No. 11 after wins over Rice and Auburn. The Aggies were followed by Florida State, Texas and Georgia. DePaul and Virginia were tied at 15th.

Arizona State fell three spots to 17th after losing at Xavier on Saturday. The Sun Devils were followed by Kansas. Mississippi State jumped six places to No. 19 after routing Utah Valley and Maryland. The Bulldogs are also playing in the Paradise Jam.

Vanderbilt, California, San Diego State, Pittsburgh, and Michigan State round out the Top 25.

Pittsburgh joined San Diego State as the new entries, with Middle Tennessee and Louisville dropping out.

    9. Doubtful. UConn will play Stanford for the final with UConn prevailing once again. Tina Charles will dominate on the glass and Maya Moore will be a scoring machine. The rest of the team will play incredible defense that will cause the Cardinal fits. OSU will never be able to handle the pace of a UConn or a Stanford matchup. Shut down Lavender and there goes the team.

Geno Auriemma's attitude is to give 100% on offense and defense every night the UConn Huskies play. Also, he uses all the strengths that he has to cover up any weakness in his line up. And with Maya Moore and Tina Charles along with Kalana Greene, Caroline Doty, and Lorin Dixon, he really has nothing to worry about. UConn will repeat again. This is a much more defensive minded team. They don't rely on just their great guys making shots. The defense is what matters most. And they can beat any team with it. ANY :)

In order to be the best, one must beat the best! Currently, UConn is the best and was the best last year. Last season, several teams proved that they could have beat UConn because they were leading at half-time. The problem is UConn seems to either want 'it' more. The 'it' is the win and ultimately...the championship, and until a team wants 'it' more and can play hard and hang tough for four quarters, and take 'it'...39+ 'it's' will remain UConn's.

The whole team have HEART to go along with their talent and skills. I've seen some serious talent so far this season, but will a whole team have the HEART to play heard every game on offense and defense from beginning to end in order to win consistently.

    We'll see...

I appreciate UConn's girls, and Geno's coaching abilities. He's proven himself, but I'm still NOT feeling his attitude.

UCon is no good . . witness how they cry like babies when they hear the name Stanford and OSU

Really? Did UConn not destroy Stanford in the 2009 final four and went on the WIN the NC? Maybe I am mistaken!

After 3 games there is NO DOUBT who the BEST TEAM with the BEST COACH with the 2 BEST PLAYERS and the BEST STARTING FIVE are. ..THE UCONN HUSKIES. They don't need a game with an old rivalry against any team out to prove that they got what it takes to beat them. HERE'S to another 39-0 season and a back to back 7th title....THEY CAN BEAT ANYONE...ANYTIME, ANYPLACE!!! All others are wannabe, pretenders, and dreamers!!! GENO AND UCONN STILL STAND ON TOP OF ANY (old, dry, rocky) SUMMITT!!!!

Uh, where is Iowa State? What's up with that?! Didn't they finish about the same as Baylor last year and land a similar recruiting class? No votes at all in one poll and ranked in the other... a bit strange considering the addition of Ana Prins, a new 6'7" center who shot 50% from the 3 point line in high school. 3 of 5 on Sunday in her first game.
