BOSTON (AP)—The former director of the NHL Players’ Association has been chosen to run a new initiative aimed at raising the profile of college hockey.

The Hockey Commissioners Association announced Tuesday night that Paul Kelly has been hired to run College Hockey Inc., the new marketing arm of NCAA Division I men’s hockey. It will be based in Newton, Mass.

The NHL players’ union voted to remove Kelly in August after a review produced a list of issues that players had with his leadership.

Kelly had worked as a trial attorney and assistant U.S. attorney in Boston before joining the NHLPA in 2007.

He is on the boards of directors of the Hockey Hall of Fame and USA Hockey. He is also an adviser to Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
