UCLA mascot gets USC paint job ahead of big game (AP)

UCLA's bruin mascot has gotten a messy paint job -- in the colors of cross-town rival USC. UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton says the statue in Bruin Square was splashed with red and gold paint sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Vandals cut through a protective tarp to vandalize the statue in the middle of the west Los Angeles campus days before Saturday's Bruins-Trojans game.

USC's faint hopes of a six-way mash-up at the top of the Pac-10 standings—which would have resulted in the Trojans going to the Rose Bowl—came to an end Saturday.

The Trojans aren't used to playing for lesser prizes, but they will have to deal with that successfully in order to avoid a total disaster at the end of the season. USC, with a Holiday Bowl berth possible if it wins out (and Oregon beats Oregon State), still has work to do.

First up this Saturday is rival UCLA, which has won three in row, albeit over the bottom three teams in the conference (Washington, Washington State, Arizona State). Regardless, the Bruins are coming in confident, ready for a fight.

Southern California receiver Damian Williams has returned to practice after missing the Trojans' last game with a sprained right ankle.
