UCLA mascot gets USC paint job ahead of big game (AP)

UCLA's bruin mascot has gotten a messy paint job -- in the colors of cross-town rival USC. UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton says the statue in Bruin Square was splashed with red and gold paint sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Vandals cut through a protective tarp to vandalize the statue in the middle of the west Los Angeles campus days before Saturday's Bruins-Trojans game.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful rivalry.

No, not USC-UCLA.

That rivalry is already pretty good, the Trojans' recent dominance (nine wins in the past 10 meetings) notwithstanding. A new one-on-one rivalry could be brewing: UCLA redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince vs. USC true freshman quarterback Matt Barkley.

It seems reasonable to assume that this Saturday's crosstown game at the Los Angeles Coliseum could be the first of three (or more) games involving the young quarterbacks, who each has had some ups and downs in their rookie seasons.

Prince was off to a good start, leading the team to a 2-0 start, but he suffered a broken jaw late in the win at Tennessee and missed the next two games.

Redshirt freshman Kevin Prince passed for 161 yards, UCLA's defense accounted for two touchdowns and set up a field goal, and the Bruins beat Arizona State 23-13 Saturday to become bowl eligible with their sixth win. Prince was 15 for 31 with no interceptions and no TDs for the Bruins (6-5, 3-5 Pac-10), whose last postseason appearance was a loss in the 2007 Las Vegas Bowl.
