The fourth quarter has suddenly become a minefield for UTEP.

Heading into the Tulane game two weeks ago, the Miners were 23-7 when leading after three quarters, including 2-0 this season.

But against both Tulane and last week against Rice, the Miners blew a fourth-quarter lead and ended up losing the game.

It's a difficult situation to understand, considering the Miners have one of the top runners in the game in junior RB Donald Buckram, who can usually be counted on to help run the clock out with the lead.

But Buckram fumbled the ball away twice against the Owls, leading to the come-from-behind victory for Rice.

Charles Ross rushed for three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, and Rice took advantage of six turnovers in a 30-29 come-from-behind victory over Texas-El Paso on Saturday. The Owls (2-9, 2-5 Conference USA) rallied from deficits of 13-0, 20-10 and 29-17 to win their second straight after starting 0-9.

SMU beats UTEP 35-31 (AP)

Kyle Padron completed 17 of 24 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns and added a pair of TD runs to lead SMU to a 35-31 win over UTEP on Saturday. SMU (6-4, 5-1 Conference USA) gained sole possession of first place in the conference's West Division after Houston lost 37-32 to Central Florida earlier in the day.
