Toby Gerhart and Stanford did to the Oregon defense what the Ducks did a week ago to Southern California, opening up the Pac-10 race with a program-defining victory. Gerhart ran for a school-record 223 yards and three scores, Andrew Luck threw for two touchdowns and Stanford held on to beat No. 7 Oregon 51-42 Saturday to become bowl eligible for the first time in eight years.

Stanford plays Oregon on Nov. 7 in what is the best possible scenario for the Cardinal.

The Ducks no doubt will be favored after taking apart USC on Oct. 31 and taking control of the Pac-10 race, but the chances for a Stanford victory, which would put the Cardinal back in the Rose Bowl race, are significantly enhanced by the situation.

Oregon is coming off that emotional win over USC, and it will be difficult for the Ducks to maintain that level of intensity in the next game, particularly with all the congratulations Oregon has received in the days following the victory. Turning complete attention to Stanford will be a chore.

"If you have the good fortune to beat USC, people want to talk about it all week," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said.

Stanford left tackle Allen Smith will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a sprained right knee, a tough break for the sixth-year senior who had worked his way back after being sidelined the past two seasons with serious left knee injuries. Smith sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee when another player fell on him during Saturday night's 33-14 home victory against Arizona State.
