Southern Miss dropped from 25th in the nation in total defense to 64th after giving up 750 yards in last week's 50-43 loss to Houston.

That gives the Golden Eagles (5-4, 3-2 C-USA) plenty of film to study and plenty of wrongs to right during their bye week, but they are still hopeful of facing the Cougars again in the C-USA championship game.

"We're counting on meeting Houston again on Dec. 5," head coach Larry Fedora said. "I think we've got a lot inside us. I think our guys are disappointed. They fought extremely hard. They fought all the way to the end and never gave in. I'm proud of the way they played the game."

Southern Miss returns to action Nov. 14 at Marshall, followed by a game at Tulsa on Nov.

Case Keenum and No. 17 Houston had 57 seconds to score and avoid overtime with Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The nation's most potent offense needed just 36. Keenum threw for a career-high 559 yards and had five touchdowns, his last coming with 21 seconds remaining, and the Cougars escaped with a 50-43 win.
