Quarterback Stephen Garcia has come a long way since last year.

The 6-2, 219-pound sophomore has thrown for 2,094 yards, including three 300-yard games. He's thrown 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.

But if South Carolina is ever going to contend for the SEC title, Garcia must take another big step forward.

Saddled with an subpar offensive line, Garcia has failed to use his running ability to avoid sacks. The Gamecocks have given up 24, most in the SEC.

"Most times Stephen just can't find anywhere to throw it," coach Steve Spurrier said. "So we're trying to coach him up a little better, and try to get him somewhere where he can throw the ball."

Garcia ranks 10th in the SEC in passing efficiency.

Tennessee and South Carolina's annual meeting has been a kind of turning point for both teams in recent years. The Volunteers (4-4, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) are hoping their 31-13 win over the Gamecocks on Saturday means the start of a strong finish to coach Lane Kiffin's first season. "It was a good win," Vols quarterback Jonathan Crompton said.

He grew up far away from the Southeastern Conference, but Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin still scanned the dial on Saturday, looking for Steve Spurrier swaggering down the sidelines. He loved how those Florida teams in the 1990s came on the field looking like they were going to win, then usually crushed their opponents.
