West Virginia coach Bill Stewart likes a comeback story and he sees a darned good one in Pittsburgh's Bill Stull. Stewart has noticed Stull's improvement since the last time No. 8 Pittsburgh (9-1, 5-0 Big East) and West Virginia (7-3, 3-2) met in the Backyard Brawl. The quarterback can help lead the Panthers to their third straight win over the Mountaineers on Friday night, something that...

Old school: Pitt old-fashioned, but successful (AP)

Pitt is as old school as it gets in college football, and it has nothing to do with the fact that the university was founded in 1787. While spread offenses are becoming the norm in college football rather than an anomaly -- see Florida, Texas, Boise State and Oregon -- Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt is winning the old-fashioned way.

Pitt’s rise out of the ashes of college football and into the elite has not come quickly or easily, but it was done the old-fashioned way.

When West Virginia’s Bill Stewart looks at it, he marvels at the approach his rival, coach Dave Wannstedt, took and pulled off.

"This is five years in the works," Stewart said. "It is five years of getting better each year and adding to the repertoire."

He understands that Wannstedt took his lumps in the form of defeat and criticism to build what he wanted.

"To me, I see many, many seniors there on their two-deep," Stewart said.

Coach Dave Wannstedt didn't need much time following Pittsburgh's improbable upset of then-No. 2 West Virginia two seasons ago to understand what the victory might mean to a program that had been in decline. It meant everything. Within days after Pitt's 13-9 road victory prevented West Virginia from playing for the national championship, Pitt received eight commitments from recruits --...

Whenever Pitt seemed ready to turn the corner and return to national prominence in the last five years, the last 10, even the last 25, a game like this always seemed to ruin it. No longer. By learning how not to lose the kind of games that perplexed coach Dave Wannstedt for several years, and Walt Harris and his predecessors before him, the No.

In need of a big win, Charlie Weis and Notre Dame couldn't turn around a troublesome trend. Pitt keeps winning and winning like it hasn't done in 27 years, and now the Panthers are one more victory away from a really big bowl. Jonathan Baldwin made two exceptional catches that allowed No. 8 Pittsburgh to open up an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter.
