   Pitt’s rise out of the ashes of college football and into the elite has not come quickly or easily, but it was done the old-fashioned way.

   When West Virginia’s Bill Stewart looks at it, he marvels at the approach his rival, coach Dave Wannstedt, took and pulled off.

   "This is five years in the works," Stewart said. "It is five years of getting better each year and adding to the repertoire."

   He understands that Wannstedt took his lumps in the form of defeat and criticism to build what he wanted.
