LaMichael James didn't necessarily figure on being a huge part of Oregon's offense this season. LeGarrette Blount was going to be the workhorse back, and another senior, Andre Crenshaw, was deemed a reliable backup and a proven player.

Then came Blount's suspension after the season-opener, and Crenshaw began the season banged up. The window of opportunity opened wide for James, a redshirt freshman from Texarkana, Texas.

"We thought he was going to be special," coach Chip Kelly said.

It's not as if James was an unknown—he was rated the 12th-best running back in the country by Rivals.com after a senior season in which he rushed for 2,043 yards and 26 touchdowns—but nobody saw this coming:

Oregon coach Chip Kelly says there's nothing to report about the possible reinstatement of suspended running back LeGarrette Blount. Kelly spoke to reporters Monday morning during his weekly teleconference. Blount was suspended for punching Boise State defensive end Byron Hout in the aftermath of Oregon's season-opening loss to the Broncos.

As the T-shirts worn in Oregon's student section proclaimed, it was Fright Night at Autzen Stadium. It certainly was for USC. Jeremiah Masoli threw for 222 yards and a touchdown and ran for 164 more yards with another score and the 10th-ranked Ducks trampled No. 4 Southern California 47-20 Saturday night, the Trojans' worst loss since 1997.
