Gauging the steps taken by Oklahoma State this season can be a bit tricky.
The Cowboys are playing in their first New Year's bowl under Mike Gundy, a Jan. 2 matchup against Mississippi in the Cotton Bowl, so that's good.
But a Bowl Championship Series berth in the Fiesta Bowl was on the table before Oklahoma State was drubbed 27-0 by Oklahoma in the last regular-season game. That left the Cowboys 9-3 after losing a nonconference game against Houston and also getting smashed at home by Texas.
