Bob Stoops might not have understood the way it was sounding when he explained that Oklahoma had all the motivation it needed for Saturday's Bedlam game against state rival Oklahoma State.

Stoops said the Sooners' prime motivation was "to improve our situation" as though that was always the prime motivation.

The difference is, in previous seasons, improving its situation meant getting a game closer to the Big 12 championship game, a BCS bowl and possibly the national championship game.

This season, that means avoiding the first non-winning regular season since the end of the John Blake era in 1998.
