There is an interesting offensive experiment unfolding at Nevada this season, where Hall of Fame coach Chris Ault—the innovator of the highly successful pistol offense and the Wolf Pack's play-caller in each of his 28 seasons—hired former Hawaii offensive quarterback and coordinator Nick Rolovich to run the offense.
Well, at least part of it.
Ault created the pistol offense in 2005 and the Wolf Pack's running game has taken off. Rolovich comes from more of a passing background—and the Wolf Pack has tried to diversify in recent years. Nevada finished No. 8 in the country in rushing offense and No. 32 in passing offense last year. Nevada had 628 rushing attempts and 409 passing attempts last season.
