Michigan State's 2009 season still has a bowl game left, likely the Alamo in San Antonio or the Insight in Tempe, Ariz. It can already safely be said, though, that this season is a disappointment.

Big Ten media picked the Spartans to finish third, and players, coaches and fans talked openly of 10 wins and Rose Bowl contention, coming off last year's nine-win, New Year's Day bowl campaign.

"In terms of disappointment, last year's seniors set the bar for us," MSU coach Mark Dantonio said after Saturday's 42-14 home blowout loss to Penn State. "We were a 9-3 football team. They set the bar. The bar was set. And we didn't measure up to that bar."

And defense was the biggest reason.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio says running back Glenn Winston and safety Roderick Jenrette have been dismissed from the team for violating team rules. The statement released Tuesday gave no other details. The moves come about a month after two other Spartans, running backs Caulton Ray and Andre Anderson, were removed from the team's active roster.

It didn't take long for Penn State to start lobbying for a BCS bid. Daryll Clark passed for 310 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as the No. 13 Nittany Lions wrapped up their regular season with a 42-14 victory against Michigan State on Saturday. Clark set a school record with his 23rd TD passes this season and set the career record with 42.

Bowl-eligible Michigan State tops Purdue 40-37 (AP)

Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes, and Michigan State overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Purdue 40-37 and become bowl eligible on Saturday. B.J. Cunningham caught three passes for 92 yards and a score for the Spartans (6-5, 4-3 Big Ten). Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott completed 39 of 55 passes for 373 yards and two touchdowns.
