Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez was handed a victory cigar after each of his four wins in September. Since then, his season has gone up in smoke. Michigan has lost five of six and dropped to 5-5 with two ugly third-quarter meltdowns leading to losses against Illinois and Purdue. The Wolverines are trying not to let anyone know that desperation is creeping into the program at a time when they hoped to be building momentum towards the postseason, and beyond. With three games to play in the 2009 season, Michigan has lost four straight Big Ten games, and four of its last five overall after a 4-0 start.
The recent loss at Illinois was a snapshot look at what many fear is happening to the Wolverines' season. Michigan went up 13-7 early against the Illini, and had four shots from the 1 yardline to make it a 20-7 lead in the third quarter.
