A fall that began with expectations for another bowl game now draws to a close with the only drama being whether Maryland is headed for the first 10-loss season in school history—and whether coach Ralph Friedgen can save his job.

The latter wasn't an issue until November, because most assumed that the sheer costs involved in the decision would keep him safe. Freidgen has two years left on his contract at somewhere around $2 million per year, and if offensive coordinator/designated head coach in waiting James Franklin is shown the door as well, that's an extra million bucks down the toilet. With the economy sour, ticket sales down, and no bowl game to add revenue, that money would seem to be hard to come by.

Greg Reid has made several big plays for Florida State this season, but none more important than Saturday. Now that Virginia Tech has another winning streak going, the Hokies intend to make the best of a season that once appeared in danger of falling apart. Tyrod Taylor threw for 268 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, and No. 20 Virginia Tech built an early 24-point lead before coasting past Maryland 36-9 on Saturday.

Although no longer a candidate for the national championship, No. 20 Virginia Tech still has several worthwhile goals within reach. Successive losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina last month ruined the Hokies' bid to finish No. 1, but Virginia Tech remains in contention to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.
