The defense beat the offense 67-53 in Maryland's Red-White spring game, and believe it or not, the defense dominated.
A convoluted scoring system allowing for points for defensive stops, sacks, batted passes, first downs, turnovers and the like accounted for the high score and kept the modest crowd of around 2,000 wondering just what was going on.
The answer for a somewhat overmatched offense was not much. A defense, even playing without three of its best players in All-ACC defensive tackle Joe Vellano and linebackers Kenny Tate and Darin Drakeford, did what they had been doing most of the spring—outshine the rebuilding offense.
