LSU loses injured RB Scott for regular season (AP)

LSU running back Charles Scott has a fractured collarbone and will miss the rest of the regular season. LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette announced the injury Sunday. Scott was injured in the second half of the Tigers' 24-15 loss to Alabama on Saturday. Scott leads the No. 9 LSU in rushing with 542 yards and four touchdowns.

LSU's ground game has run aground. The ninth-ranked Tigers are averaging 141.5 yards rushing. Not a terrible number, but that's 25 yards per game below their pace from a season earlier and 73 yards below their average during their 2007 national championship campaign. Some good games against bad teams have helped LSU pad its stats, too.

The situation will be far more definitive for Alabama than for LSU when the teams meet in Tuscaloosa.

If the Tide wins the matchup, it will win the SEC Western Division and play Florida, which has clinched the Eastern Division, in the conference championship game.

On the other hand ...

The Tigers, though they would hold the tiebreaker over the Tide should the two wind up with identical records, would still have some work to do. If the Tigers beat the Tide but lose one of their remaining conference games while Alabama wins out, Bama gets the division.

But that doesn't take away anything from this much-anticipated matchup, which is the way the Tigers like it.

"Since I've been here, we've enjoyed games of significance," coach Les Miles said.

Les Miles figures there's little use in trying to ignore the fact that No. 9 LSU's game at Alabama on Nov. 7 is looming largest on the minds of just about everyone associated with the program. He only hopes his players will see Saturday night's home game against struggling Tulane as a much-needed opportunity to get better before LSU (6-1) returns to its Southeastern Conference schedule.
