It didn't take new coach Tim Beckman long to make a connection with his players.
After a year of turmoil, that has to be considered a good thing. Illinois began the season by winning its first six games, but then lost six in a row, a streak that cost head coach Ron Zook his job. A victory over UCLA in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl did little to soothe the bad feelings that overwhelmed the season.
Beckman was hired in December, but didn't coach the team in the bowl game. He immediately went to work in getting to know his players. That effort appears to be paying off.
