Georgia's Richt enduring first serious downswing (AP)

Mark Richt's worst season as Georgia's coach may not have hit bottom. Richt's 6-5 Bulldogs are underdogs for Saturday's game at No. 7 Georgia Tech. Georgia must upset the Yellow Jackets or win its bowl game to avoid the program's first losing season since Jim Donnan's 5-6 debut in 1996.

Georgia hasn't put together the type of season that players and coaches had envisioned.

But the Bulldogs (6-5, 4-4 SEC) can salvage some pride with a win Saturday over rival Georgia Tech.

"We have had some ups and downs, but getting a win against Tech would be huge," offensive lineman Clint Boling said. "We can finish the season off right with a victory."

Georgia is coming off a disappointing 34-27 loss against Kentucky. The Bulldogs turned the ball over four times in the second half, blowing a 20-6 halftime lead.

"We are just trying not to quit on the season after everything that's happened," Boling said. "If we can win against Tech that would be great for our team morale and emotions going into the bowl game."

It won't be easy.

Just another game? Georgia Tech vs. Georgia? Well, that's the way Paul Johnson sees it. In comments sure to stoke the rivalry even more, the second-year coach of the No. 7 Yellow Jackets said he looks at Saturday's contest against disappointing Georgia just like he would any other game on the schedule.

Georgia Tech's bowl plans and ACC championship hopes will not be on the line when the Yellow Jackets play Georgia this week. That comes a week later, when they play Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game in Tampa, Fla. The winner goes to the Orange Bowl, no matter the outcome of Georgia Tech's in-state rivalry game.

Uga VII, the white English bulldog mascot for the University of Georgia's football team for almost two seasons, died Thursday of heart-related causes, the dog's owner said. The 56-pound dog, nicknamed "Loran's Best," was known as a laid-back mascot who seemed oblivious to crowd noise during boisterous games and would sit patiently as excited fans snapped photos of him.
