Fresno State plays a rare December non-conference game to conclude its regular season. But the trip to Illinois is not the only thing swirling around the team, which is headed to a bowl for the third consecutive season and is dealing with the possible defection of junior running back Ryan Mathews to the NFL.

While the feeling around the program is that Mathews - who was the nation's leading rusher before suffering a concussion against Nevada and still ranks No. 3 in the nation - is gone. But Mathews has maintained that he has not made a decision and will base his decision on evaluations of his draft status.

The Bulldogs will also need to address coach Pat Hill's contract and status after the season.

Kevin Goessling's 35-yard field goal on the game's final play lifted Fresno State to a 30-28 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday. Ryan Colburn completed just 17 of 42 passes for 182 yards but marched Fresno State (7-4, 6-2 Western Athletic Conference) 68 yards in the final 2 minutes, 21 seconds to set up Goessling's winning kick.

Fresno St. RB Mathews sidelined by concussion (AP)

Fresno State will be without the nation's leading rusher, Ryan Mathews, for Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech. Coach Pat Hill said Tuesday that Mathews will miss the game after sustaining a concussion last week against Nevada. Hill says he expects Mathews will likely be able to return for the season finale at Illinois on Dec.

Luke Lippincott rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead Nevada over Fresno State 52-14 on Saturday. Vai Taua rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolf Pack (7-3, 6-0 Western Athletic). Colin Kaepernick added 95 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Nevada, the nation's No. 1 rushing offense, which rolled up 461 yards Saturday.
