Everyone is aware of running back Ryan Mathews, the nation's leading rusher. And that includes opposing defensive coordinators who are crowding the line of scrimmage in an attempt to shut down Mathews, who is averaging 164.5 yards per game.

Fresno State is attempting to make teams pay for that focus on Mathews. Quarterback Ryan Colburn passed for 256 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown on Fresno State's first play.

No one expects defensive formulas to change anytime soon.

"If you were a defensive coordinator, wouldn't you do the same and focus on stopping him?" Colburn told the Fresno Bee.

So it will be up to Colburn and the Bulldogs' passing game to give opponents a reason to back off the line of scrimmage.
