Back on Sept. 20, when California was 3-0 and ranked No. 6 in the country and Stanford was unranked, it seemed the Bears' Nov. 21 game against archrival Stanford in Palo Alto might have Rose Bowl implications.

Well, it does. Just not in the way expected two months ago.

Now Stanford is the ranked team hoping for a Rose Bowl berth, and the Bears are the underdogs playing the spoiler role.

Cal got hammered by a combined score of 72-6 by Oregon and Southern Cal in its first two conference games to expose the Bears as ill-equipped to challenge for the Pac-10 title, and those are the same two opponents Stanford has beaten while scoring 106 points the past two weeks to put itself in the conference title chase.
