Ball State won't play for the Mid-American Conference championship this season like it did last year, and it hasn't affected the outcome of the West and East division races by beating contenders.

But the Cardinals have hands-on knowledge of which teams have the best chance to win the conference title when the championship game is played Dec. 4 in Detroit.

Ball State lost to the top two teams in the MAC West when it fell in consecutive games to Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.

The Cardinals played the top two teams in the MAC East, Temple and Ohio, in October. They also lost to both of those contenders.

So was Central Michigan, the preseason MAC favorite, the best?

Ball State rallies past Western Michigan 22-17 (AP)

Charlie Todd returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter for the game-winning points in Ball State's 22-17 victory over Western Michigan on Tuesday night. MiQuale Lewis' 3-yard run accounted for Ball State's only offensive touchdown. Ian McGarvey kicked three field goals for the Cardinals (2-10, 2-6 Mid-American).

LeFevour, Central Michigan rout Ball State 35-3 (AP)

Dan LeFevour threw four touchdown passes, ran for a fifth score and became the all-time leading passer in Mid-American Conference history as he led Central Michigan to a 35-3 victory over Ball State on Wednesday night. The senior quarterback ignored a steady rain to complete 25 of 28 passes for 344 yards and no interceptions before taking a seat midway through the fourth quarter.
