The Arizona Wildcats dispatched woeful Washington State with ease. Now comes the hard part for the No. 21 Wildcats. Travis Cobb returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for Arizona in a 48-7 rout of the Cougars on Saturday. The victory, combined with Oregon's loss at Stanford, moves the Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Pac-10) within a half-game of the first-place Ducks.

Arizona's most recent game allowed the defense to "finally get its swagger back," according to free safety Cam Nelson.

The Wildcats are coming off their second bye week of the season, which was important in the effort to try to get some key players healthy, notably running back Nic Grigsby and defensive end Brooks Reed.

Arizona carried a good feeling through the week, as it was coming off a 27-13 home win over UCLA and savoring the program's first appearance in the national polls in nine years. While idle, Arizona moved up from No. 24 to No. 19 in the coaches poll, and from No. 23 to No. 21 in the Associated Press poll.

"I think we're earning more and more respect," coach Mike Stoops said.

Arizona likely will be without two of its top tailbacks when it plays host to Washington State on Saturday. The Wildcats (5-2, 3-1 Pac-10) are coming off a bye, but the extra time doesn't figure to be enough to heal the shoulder sprains of starting tailback Nic Grigsby and third-stringer Greg Nwoko.

Arizona free safety Cam Nelson cringed when Pac-10 media picked the Arizona Wildcats to finish eighth this season. The media didn't seem to care that the Wildcats were coming off their best season in a decade, capped by a Las Vegas Bowl victory over No. 17 Brigham Young. Reporters projected Arizona to finish ahead of only Washington and Washington State, which went a combined 2-23 in 2008.
