Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli watched as red-clad Arizona students ringed the sidelines as time ticked down, ready to rush the field. "I saw it and I actually smirked," Masoli said. The Rose Bowl dreams are gone. Arizona will have to wait until next season. Again.
The Wildcats had one of the biggest days in their history on Saturday. ESPN "GameDay" was on campus, and Arizona had a prime-time game on ABC against the 11th-ranked Oregon Ducks. Arizona also had a 24-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. A win would have given the Wildcats undisputed control of the Pac-10 race.
But it was Oregon that made a series of plays down the stretch, including a 43-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar and through the uprights to tie the game at 24 with 8:02 left.
The Wildcats (6-4, 4-3) responded with a 71-yard catch-and-run by Juron Criner on a bubble screen, and then the Ducks turned the ball over on downs at their 45. ...More |
