Scouting Report on Jake Matthews

How we scouted: Film footage, In-person visits, Game setting, Campby Barry Every - 08/25/2009
  • SpeedBlue Chip
  • SizeBlue Chip
  • StrengthDivision I Player
  • AgilityBlue Chip
  • Foot QuicknessBlue Chip
On the Hoof: He is a legit 6-foot-5, 280 pounds and looks very lean with a frame that can hold at least another 25 pounds. Matthews has long arms and a very good powerbase.
Needs Improvement: Matthews still needs to improve his pass blocking, because he played quarterback as a freshman before moving to center as a sophomore. He will need to add some upper body weight and strength.
Most Impressive: He is very athletic and has the size and athleticism to play all five offensive line positions. Matthews also excels as a drive blocker using good pad level, flexible knees and hips to explode out of his stance.
Conclusion: He has the pedigree and superior physical tools to actually contribute along the offensive line as a freshman. He will be plugged into whatever position is weakest when he arrives on campus initially, increasing the potential for early playing time. He could end up being a three-year starter that plays multiple positions in his college career.
