Scouting Report on Garrison Smith

How we scouted: Film footage, In-person visits, Game setting, Campby Barry Every - 08/17/2009
  • SpeedBlue Chip

  • StrengthBlue Chip
  • AgilityBlue Chip
  • Lateral PursuitBlue Chip
On the Hoof: Smith possesses wide shoulders with very long arms on top of a very athletic lower body. His frame can easily hold another 30 to 40 more pounds. He should remind fans of a of former Georgia great Jonathan Sullivan at the same age.
Needs Improvement: If he is to project as an inside player, he will need to gain weight because he surely will be pushed off the ball at the next level at 250 to 260 pounds. Smith, like many other young linemen, needs to be more consistent with pad level at the point of attack.
Most Impressive: He pursues the ball with reckless abandon and is extremely athletic for his size. Whether he is a strongside defensive end or a defensive tackle, he will provide a pass-rushing threat because of his quickness off the ball.
Conclusion: If he plays as a freshman, it will most likely be at defensive end until he gains the girth needed to do battle inside. Smith is very smart and should be able to pick up the defensive alignments and signals quickly. So don't be surprised if he is on the two-deep as a freshman. Barring injuries, it is safe to slot him in a starter by his second season of college football.
