On the Hoof: One of the more unique prospects physically in the country, McCain is an extremely long, gangly outside linebacker. He has long, skinny arms and legs, is wiry strong and looks much more like a basketball player than a football player out of pads.
Needs improvement: McCain needs to fill out and get stronger. Though he is 6 feet 6, he is barely more than 200 pounds and that puts him at a disadvantage at the point of attack both with blockers and ball carriers. He is at a natural disadvantage with leverage most of the time, so he must continue to focus on maintaining a good pad level in tight spaces.
Most impressive: It is very rare to see a linebacker that has his kind of range and length. Because of his wingspan, McCain can track things down that other linebackers can’t touch, and he actually uses his height as an advantage to make him very effective in space. McCain runs extremely well vertically and sideline to sideline.
Conclusion: Due to his unique physical makeup, McCain is very much a boom or bust prospect. It is very possible that he won’t be able to get strong enough or add the weight to be physical in the college football game. But if he is able to get stronger and develop the right way, he has the athleticism to be an absolute monster a couple of years into his career.

Barton Simmons is a Football Recruiting Analyst for Rivals.com. He was an all-state performer for two-time state champion and nationally ranked Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy in high school and was a two-time All-Ivy selection as a safety at Yale.
