Tennessee Tech tops Austin Peay 49-7 for OVC title
Saturday, Nov 19, 2011COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tre Lamb rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another as Tennessee Tech won its first Ohio Valley Conference championship since 1975 with a 49-7 rout of Austin Peay on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (7-3, 6-2) finished in a three-way tie atop the conference with Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State, but beat both teams head-to-head to receive the OVC’s automatic berth to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Dontay Gay rushed for 192 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark and his 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave him Tennessee Tech’s record for single-season rushing scores with 15.
The Golden Eagles had three first-half fumbles en route to a 14-7 halftime lead, then scored four TDs in the third quarter.
Lamb scored on runs of 1, 12 and 3 yards and threw a 61-yard TD pass to Cody Matthews.
Ryan White rushed for 140 yards for the Governors (3-8, 2-6).
