Tech doesn’t score much, but beats Baylor 20-13

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Taylor Potts threw a pair of touchdown passes to Lyle Leong less than two minutes apart midway through the third quarter, and the defense made a goal-line stand in the final minutes, giving Texas Tech a 20-13 victory over Baylor on Saturday night.

Playing in front of a heavily pro-Tech crowd at Cowboys Stadium, the Red Raiders (8-4, 5-3 Big 12) scored their fewest points in a victory since beating Texas A&M 12-0 in November 2001. It was the third-fewest points in a victory in coach Mike Leach’s 10-year tenure.

Texas Tech came in averaging 38.2 points, seventh-best in the nation, but looked nothing like an offensive juggernaut. The Red Raiders didn’t score until getting a field goal with four seconds remaining in the first quarter. Other than the back-to-back touchdowns, their only points came on a 43-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Baylor (4-8, 1-7) let senior quarterback Blake Szymanski start his final game and he nearly pulled off the upset. He kept the Bears close all game, then had them at first-and-goal from the 10 late in the fourth quarter.

On fourth down from the 5, he scrambled to his right and threw behind receiver Ernest Smith. Even if Smith had caught it, he wasn’t in the end zone, and two Tech players were near him. Baylor never threw into the end zone on that final series.

The Red Raiders came into the game knowing they were likely headed to the Holiday or Alamo bowls. While they were hoping to return for the first Cotton Bowl in Cowboys Stadium, the Big 12’s spot likely will go to Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys lost their chance for a spot in a BCS game by losing to Oklahoma on Saturday.

We need to move the Baylor game to earlier in the season. The team takes for granted that they can beat the Bears, so it's a trap game every year. We need a worthy opponent to close the season - someone our guys will get excited about playing.

Call me crazy, but this win was not all that great for us. Imagine if Baylor had a healthy Robert Griffin III, Baylor blows us out.

wow, i was wondering which team would show up today. the bears showed up. the raiders team that showed up today was the same one that showed up for the aggies. the raiders have lacked consistency and focus this year. this team had the potential to go 10 - 2. this is the first team leach has had that i can remember which was so inconsistent week to week. this should have been a showcase game for the big 12 and an audition for a better bowl. instead, it was a bowl ready team (Baylor) playing an immature inconsistent and unfocused team (tech). why can't they get it together?

so now its probably alamo bowl or worse for tech. OSU will now take one of the bowls like the cotton or holiday bowl my guess, and Nebraska gets the other one. Tech did nothing to enhance their position for a better bowl if the bowl reps were there watching in my opinion.

well done to ruffin. that defense is playing the best that i have seen since spike era d. they too seemed to be unfocused in the first half, but held on just enough to give themselves a chance in the second half. the third quarter was the bright spot for tech. both the d and the offense finally turned it on. thank goodness the bears couldn't punch it in at the end. thank goodness they did not have Griffin or there would have been a different outcome IMO...

Overall, I'm pleased with the win and with our defense's performance, but I have a few things to remark upon regarding our quarterback. Potts still looks uncomfortable in the pocket. He's getting a bit better at detecting pressure and at responding appropriately to the rush by moving forward in the pocket, but nobody's confusing him for Roger Staubach. Can we get a quarterback coach to get him to stop opening up his shoulders before he slings his arm across his body? He's losing accuracy, ball speed and telegraphs his passes this way. (Defend where his belly button points). We aren't going to make him a clone of Johnny Unitas, but working on his form might help. Send his butt to Peyton Manning's quarterback camp. Aw, to heck with it...heal faster, Sticks!

Re: comments from the TT crowd

Numbers are numbers ... Baylor simply doesn't have the alumni or student body to fill half of Jerry Jones' Cathedral. Add to the mix that TCU and SMU (both small, private schools like Baylor) were drawing their share of the potential local crowd to games within 30 miles of Cowboy Stadium and the attendance shakeout makes sense. Besides, who the heck wants to watch a College game in a venue that minimizes the game by making itself the center of attention?

Sorry, it's twice that long of a drive from Waco and Tech has three times as many alumni and students as Baylor does.
