Garcia, defense help Gamecocks top No. 15 Clemson

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)—South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier still has a few of those Heisman Trophy moves.

Gamecocks captain Moe Brown and fellow senior Garrett Anderson chased an elusive Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman winner at Florida, with a water bucket and eventually doused their coach after beating rival No. 15 Clemson 34-17 Saturday.

Spurrier’s rule is save such showers for championships. Even the head ball coach had to smile when Brown pointed out the Gamecocks won the Palmetto State title.

“I figured I only got one game left, he can’t be too mad at me,” Brown said. “We said we won the state championship and he gave me a hug.”

“That was a big win,” Brown said. “We needed it.”

Besides short-circuiting another late-season swoon, the Gamecocks (7-5) most likely earned a bid to one of the Southeastern Conference’s mid-tier bowls like the Music City or Chick-fil-A.

“It was a wonderful win,” Spurrier said.

And it came mostly because South Carolina’s defense slowed a Tigers attack that had averaged more than 40 points and 415 yards during its six-game win streak.

Clemson’s run brought it an ACC Atlantic Division crown and a spot in next week’s league title game against Georgia Tech. The Tigers (8-4) had few answers for South Carolina’s rested and raring-to-go defenders.

Clemson star C.J. Spiller had his NCAA record-setting seventh career kickoff return touchdown to start the game. He managed only 18 yards on the ground after that.

Spiller battled an illness throughout, saying he felt sick to his stomach. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Spiller “tweaked” his groin but should be fine by next week.

By the end, backups Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper did most of the backfield work.

“It’s better for another guy to be out there than for me to be out there not giving it my all,” Spiller said.

Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes as South Carolina put a temporary halt to Clemson’s series dominance.

Clemson had won two straight, six out of seven and 10 of 12 against the Gamecocks, who had only one victory over the Tigers in the last 10 games at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Clemson had just 260 yards of offense. Spiller finished with 18 yards rushing and 19 receiving.

South Carolina fans chanted “S-E-C” as the outcome became clear.

The Tigers head into next week’s championship with several questions to answer. No. 1 among them: What happened to the offense?

Swinney says the team will respond with character and hard work.

“Our next goal is to try and win the ACC,” Swinney said. “We will turn the page.”

After Spiller struck for his 88-yard kickoff return just 20 seconds in—it was his fourth such score this season—the orange-clad fans among the 80,574 in the stands had little reason to doubt it’d be another day to celebrate.

But the Tigers had only 138 yards through three quarters.

There were interceptions, fumbles and penalties galore that helped South Carolina score 17 points in the opening half, more than it had in any of its last five games.

“We were moving the ball down the field and moving on their defense and then we would kill ourselves,” Clemson tight end Michael Palmer said.

South Carolina made the Tigers pay.

Jamie Harper’s fumble turned into a 1-yard touchdown run by Brian Maddox to tie things.

Kyle Parker’s first interception in three games followed on Clemson’s next drive, with freshman DeVonte Holloman returning it 54 yards to the Tigers 11. Garcia connected with tight end Weslye Saunders for the go-ahead score from 9 yards out.

If you needed proof this was the Gamecocks’ day, it came a series later.

Ricky Sapp had a roughing penalty on a punt to keep another Gamecocks drive going. That one ended with Spencer Lanning clanging a 47-yard field goal off the right upright.

Garcia clinched things in the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown throw to a wide-open Tori Gurley.

Spiller fumbled on the Tigers’ first possession of the second half, and Clemson got just one first down its next three series.

The victory ended what looked like another late-season swoon in Spurrier’s fifth year as Gamecocks coach.

In 2007, South Carolina opened 6-1 and lost its last five. A year ago, a 7-3 start was ruined by three straight defeats down the stretch.

The Gamecocks were 6-2 a month ago after beating Vanderbilt 14-10. Losses to Tennessee, Arkansas and top-ranked Florida had Spurrier fielding uncomfortable questions about playcalling and his future.

Spurrier, testily at times, preached patience and reminded critics his team’s best days were down the road. That showed against the Tigers.

Hollomon’s game-changing interception was the first of his career. Defensive back Stephon Gilmore, Holloman’s teammate at South Pointe High last fall, was used successfully in a wildcat look that set up Maddox’s tying touchdown.

Senior linebacker Eric Norwood reminded everyone how important it is to beat your rival.

“It feels good,” Norwood said, smiling. “It feels like we’re 10-0.”

    WHAT ORANGE Bowl?
Yes Clemson we are Proud of our Game@#$% when they Finally Beat Clemson, and and yes Clemson has beaten the Game@#$% 99 out of the past 100 games, but the one that counts is 34 to 17 in 2009, and the difference between Clemson and Carolina is that we are still Proud of our Game@#$% Win or Lose and show our Colors either way...... So where is all that Orange????
Oh!! Yes who wanted to Fire their Coach when they had lost a couple of games???? I just cannot imagine who that may be...
And by the way to both groups of Fans, there is a University before the Football Team?, and both Schools fair well for our State, "for those that only see the Stadium".......

when 2 mid-level SEC teams take apart the top 2 acc teams , that should tell u something . clemson is up every year for this game even more than SC and anytime cu wants to switch schedules for a couple of years , lets do it . cu has made a living of going to chic -fil-a bowl for years and losing their bowl games , and even kentucky has beat them , but i'm sure clemson was'nt up for those games either . the last win they had was over a mediocre tenn. team in atlanta , so get over it and take a whippin every few years . it took a SEC defense to shut down the only two players they have , not a jv conference!!!!!!

What did Clemson have to play for on Saturday? For Carolina not USC, the Trojans would trounced Carolina ten out of ten times if they played, it was about trying to secure a bowl bid for the team. The Peach wants Georgia, the Liberty and Music City are crazy for Tenn., and the .com bowl wants Auburn. So that left the Independence and the loser on Tenn as the only places for Carolina to play. Clemson did play poorly but Carolina came out ready as this was their super bowl. This team had already tanked for the year and the only way to salvage the season and more Spurrier out rumors was to win and against an uninspired Clemson team with nothing to play for Carolina did. If you watch Clemson Harper and Ellington usually do not get ten plus carries each in a game, so if that is not playing the back-up more than usually then you are either unknowledgeable or a carolina fan. Clemson did not help themselves giving away 24 points with the turnovers, roughing the kicker? questionable call, and giving carolina a short field after the onsides kick. But they did and lost, real classy of Spurrier to punch one in with two minutes left to make the score look more onesided than anyone watching the game knows it was. The point is Clemson played as badly as they could and Carolina about as good as they could and the result was Carolina's first win in three years and their third of the decade. As a Clemson fan, I will take seven out of ten anytime and a trip to play for the Orange bowl over being 7-5 every year and visiting such exotic places as Nashville, Birmingham, Memphis, or Shreveport. Watch out for Carolina next season because of the soft non-conference schedule So. Miss, Troy? come on and other than the loses to Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida in the SEC, this team might win nine games and for the university in Columbia that is like winning the national title. Carlina has the chance next season to win big for that program but if they do not win at least 18 to 19 games the next two years then it shows the lack of coaching thata has led to Spurrier being 35-28 over his tenure.

South Carolina either next year or the year after will be one of the top teams in the country. We showed glimpses of our talent this year, and most of our stars are freshman or sophmores so watch out!!

Wow...so now we have to beat the elite teams from ALL of the conferences...SEC has only 2 more teams than the PAC 10...and that counts (private school) Vandy. Fine...pick two teams to remove from the SEC for the PAC-10/SEC tourney and my bet still stands...I am sure you'd take the top 2...which just proves my point.

As far as those teams you mention...I would make the same bet pitting the SEC vs the Big 12....and that's 12 on 12.

(Again...making these arguments does nothing to make your ACC look better and only bolsters the significance of the SEC.)

Yeah, well if the pac had a conference as large as the SEC, I'm sure they can equal the number of teams that can compare the same to the SEC for victories outside the conference. Lets not forget teams in other conferences......Neb, oklast, okla, texas etc whom can and have proven to compete equally with the SEC.........now thats putting ur money where ur mouth (keyboard) is

Way to make your conference (ACC) look better...compare two other conferences (SEC and PAC-10).

That said, the SEC hands down is better than the PAC-10 (and any other conference) when it comes to football. You can not say PAC-10 is better simply b/c they match a couple of their top teams against a couple of our mediocre teams and win. While the PAC-10 has only a couple of elites within the conference, the SEC has 6 - 10 teams year in and year out that can beat anybody in the country. You can't say that about any other conference. If you take the PAC-10 and line them up against the SEC in order of conference rank, I'm betting that any PAC-10 victory would indeed be an upset...and I'd put my money where my mouth (keyboard) is.

CLEMSON! WAKE UP! How much of this eggbeating are u going to take from those egg-layers (gameSUCKS) and the rest of the OVER-RATED SEC LOUDMOUTHZ?! They struggle with the Pac-10 yearly and lucky ta win one against any of em! So they may be better than the ACC, but not above other conferences in which they want to believe.

Here we go again with the ACC defenders and braggarts. Every league compares itself to the SEC. I heard on national sports radio the PAC 10, Big 10, and the ACC comparing itself to the SEC. When other conferences compare their teams to the ACC then they can claim to be the elite league. Wait a minute, they do compare themselves to the ACC, "at least we are better than the ACC". But, the ACC is still the best in basketball.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? USC defeats Clemson. Gerogia defeats Georgia Tech. But Clemson and GT are playing next week for an Orange Bowl bid..... The ACC should be embarrassed.

First off, FSU could have had USC's spot in the SEC, but opted for the easiest conference in the south, the AsuCC. Moo U won the conference in the 80's and FSU won 64 of their first 65 and the conference every year. If not for their dominance and nat' titles the AsuCC would have folded and become the Big East south reps. When VT joined up, it became theirs and until year 5, the only original member to win the AsuCC was WAKE lol. When WAKE reps you and loses to nobody in what has become the wasted bcs bowl bid, your conference sux. Now your champs lose to ugay & USC and your comeback is, we don't care about our rivals? Perpsective: clownson had nothing to play for, but gay tech could have de factoed themselves into championship talk with a loss by Texas and feasibly could have finished at #2 by winning out.

    And I forgot to mention...

It was those same three "backups," Spiller, Ford, and QB...that turned the ball over four times!

And one of Clemson's five posted goals for the season: Beat SC. So don't try to say they did not want it. Mission failure!

As for Spllier's health...he looked fine on the opening re-kick...even striking a Heisman pose (that should have been flaged for 15!) in the endzone.

Seriously Rusty...Clemson used backups most of the game? Well then it was the same backups they've used all season. Spiller, Ford, and the QB (whose name I can not remember b/c he did nothing like the rest of them) played the entire game. And if not for a bogus offsides call o nthe opening kickoff, Spiller would not have even had the TD. The only other Clemson points came in what is known as "garbage time" when the outcome was already decided.

Stop making excuses...you got beat...and it did mean something, b/c when you lose to GT, you'll wish that extra loss didn;t drop you to an even lesser bowl.

    Go SEC and SC...ACC sucks.

clemson fans are pathetic. every time they lose its's "we felt bad and decided to let you win once in awhile" its bull@#$%. this is one of the most heated rivalrys in the country and no matter how "bad" you feel for the other team, you arent going to hand them the game. Clemson got dominated completely in this game and there is only one thing that explains it. the Game@#$% wanted it more and out-matched Clemson. and to add to that, South Carolina has the second youngest team in the NCAA today. with only 7 starting seniors and 9 overall graduating, this was just a preview of what is to come of this team. between this game and the UG vs GT game, it shows the SEC is truly outclassing the ACC year in and year out. ok so you had ten go bowling last year? who cares, i would match any SEC team against any ACC team and SEC would definately come out the victor. and when has the ACC have ONE much less TWO teams stay in the top ten all season for two years straight??? well thats the end of my rant, any comments?

South Carolina wanted more than Clemson did yesterday. Clemson plagued by mistakes and South Carolina took advantage by turning it into points. What really surprised me is how the Game@#$% ran the ball against Clemson The Game@#$% played harder and better yesterday, like everying was on the line for them yesterday and that's coming from a Tiger fan. Got to give it up, South Carolina did the job, bottom line. The only thing about yesterday is that Clemson can look forward toward the ACC Championship Game next week.

guess some of the SEC fans dont understand Georgia and USC had nothing to lose, and Clemson and GT had alot to lose, both teams know a lose meant nothing.

and also it was a rivalry game, nothing to do with ACC vs SEC. look at OSU vs OU yesterday, OU blanked them 27-0 and OU was 6-5 while OSU was 9-2.

USC fans act like the world has ended when they finally beat Clemson, maybe cause its happened so few times so they have to enjoy it

also 10 ACC teams went bowling last year, dont be tring to beef up the SEC by being the first conference to have 10 in a bowl season
