Stanford beats Notre Dame in Weis’ possible finale

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Toby Gerhart turned what could be Charlie Weis’ final game as Notre Dame coach into his own Heisman Trophy infomercial.

Gerhart ran for 205 yards and three scores, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass and scored the game-winning touchdown with 59 seconds left to help Stanford hand Weis and the Fighting Irish a fourth straight loss to end the regular season, 45-38 Saturday night.

“There’s a bunch of 22, 23-year-old young men right there finishing out their career losing the last four games,” Weis said in a postgame radio interview. “They feel miserable and I feel miserable for them.”

Weis only conducted a radio interview after the game, declining to take part in the postgame news conference. He did not address his job status, but that should come to a resolution soon.

Weis was set to go back to Indiana with the team instead of going on a recruiting trip as originally planned and will meet soon with athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

“We’ll engage in the evaluation in earnest following this game and we’ll go from there,” Swarbrick said before the game. He declined to comment after the game.

Weis, who has six years left on his contract, has a 35-27 record in five years as Irish head coach. His .565 winning percentage is worse than the .583 marks that got his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

While Weis’ future may have already been decided, this signature performance by Gerhart may have been enough to earn him a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist in two weeks.

“He’s made that statement the entire year,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “He was incredible to watch. He said it all by the way he’s played. He’s been about it and not talked about it. He just kept going at it week after week.”

He threw his touchdown pass to Ryan Whalen on fourth-and-4 to help the Cardinal tie the game early in the fourth quarter. After Stanford (8-4) stopped Robert Hughes on third-and-2 from the Irish 35 with less than 6 minutes left, Gerhart carried seven times for 54 yards on the winning drive, bowling over would-be tacklers before scoring his 26th rushing touchdown of the season.

The fans chanted “To-by! To-by!” throughout the drive that was capped by a 4-yard run that the Irish (6-6) allowed him to score on in order to have time for a possible game-tying drive.

Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate helped move Notre Dame down to the 24 before Chase Thomas sacked Clausen for a 7-yard loss. On the final play, Clausen’s desperation heave into the end zone was batted down by Michael Thomas, giving Stanford its first win against Notre Dame since 2001.

“It’s frustrating,” Clausen said. “It seems like every time we lose a game, we lose it by a touchdown or less. I’m a competitive athlete. It’s just really tough.”

All six losses by the Irish have been by seven points or fewer, with Notre Dame also winning four games by similar margins.

The game could also be the last at Notre Dame for Clausen and Tate, who must decide whether to skip their senior seasons to go into the NFL draft. The Irish also have not decided whether to accept a bowl bid.

Clausen matched a career high with five touchdown passes, completing 23 of 30 for 340 yards. Tate had 10 catches for 201 yards and three scores, while Michael Floyd also caught two touchdown passes.

“Everybody’s a little upset, a little emotional about this game just because it’s our last regular season game with our seniors and everybody who’s leaving,” Tate said.

Weis opened up the playbook in what could have been his goodbye game. The play of the game for the Irish came early in the third quarter when they lined up in the Leprecat formation. Hughes took the direct snap out of the shotgun and handed to Tate on an end-around. Tate flipped it to Clausen, who was lined up as a receiver to start the play, and Clausen then found a wide open Floyd for a 46-yard touchdown.

Tate added his own highlight reel play early in the fourth quarter catching a short pass from Clausen at the 19 with Stanford giving him a huge cushion. Tate then wove his way through nine defenders, running all the way across the field to complete the 28-yard score that made it 38-30. He also scored on a 78-yard catch and a 5-yard catch, setting the school record for career receiving yards at 2,707 yards.

Harbaugh had a few of his own tricks as well, calling the fourth-down halfback option. That could have been Gerhart’s so-called Heisman moment in a season in which he set a Pac-10 record with 26 touchdowns and leads the nation with 1,736 yards rushing.

“We practice that once a week,” Gerhart said. “I threw up a prayer and he made a great play. In practice those plays are wide open.”

Andrew Luck’s pass to Jim Dray for the 2-point conversion tied the game at 38 with 8:59 to go.

I think all of the blame for this situation lies with the high placed alumni and notre dame administration... You can't really blame the fans for whats happened in South Bend.... Notre Dame Fans can continue to beleive they are a top five program and should warrant NFL caliber recruits all over the field, but until the school's braintrust takes a hard look at the program and realizes what they are, there will be many more disappointing seasons ahead for Notre Dame Football. I stated in my previous post that giving weis that extension was dumb... If Notre Dame's braintrust still thinks notre dame is a top five program, then why would any coach want to leave?

Say what you want to about Mr. Weis, but he is going to make more money by being fired than just about anyone here will make in a lifetime. :-)

I started calling him The Hamburgular after he signed that huge contract midway during his first year...after a LOSS.

His best moment: in his second year; ND beat a half-way-decent Georgia Tech team on the road and then crushed Penn State 41-17 (41-3 when ND called off the dogs). Then they got blown out by Michigan and things more or less went downhill from there, even though ND won several more games (last minute against UCLA and Michigan State)

Good comment mark m 434. Way to do research. Now explain to me how it is that Norte Dame is garanteed a bowl bid every year even with losing seasons and other teams have to compete. (Boise State?)

Yeah, Notre Dame has a big fan base, but as they slip further and further into mediocrety, they are slowly losing fans. How long will NBC support a loser? You expand your fan base by winning. I don't see Irish winning consistantly against quality opponents any time soon.

Notre Dame's problem wont be solved by joining a conference..they have to start winning games agains ranked teams, no matter who they are. Since weis took over..they have only beat one team ranked out of twenty one attempts. If you can't beat a school that primarily only runs, like navy, you deserve to get fired and i agree that the contract weis was given was a joke to begin with. He hadn't done a thing to warrent the contract extention in the first place and now you are either stuck with his overrated butt or the prospect of losing your starting qauterback, reciever, head coach who should've been the oc in the first place and forcing a new coach to come in and start from scratch with everything. Nevermind the current coaching staff..they will have to be replaced as well..the ad for notre dame and the alums did this to themselves.

The bottom line with notre dame as a fan is that they can't get quality players anymore...there isn't any imagination with the play calling and the defense was just sorry...you don't have to look any further than the play against stanford late when the defense just watched as the running back for stanford just walked untouched into the endzone. There isn't anyone getting upset...jumping in team mates face or anything..just no life anywhere. The school will always suffer bcuz of the strict academic standards and the fact that until they can get a coach with a really impressive resume, no one wants to go to Indiana for school when they can go to any school in the acc or the big programs in the big twelve or usc to get attention..just face it...notre dame isnt what it used to be and soon as everyone realizes it....the better off they'll be. I love notre dame but its sad when weis had no better record than willingham or davie had when they were fired. He's a oc and that's it..not a good head coach...just a great oc.

If Notre Dame does fire Weis maybe he could go to the Browns and be Quinn's QB coach or the Browns off.coordinator.....after all he and Brown's head coach worked togather at N.E. and he was Quinn's coach at N.D.

Great point.......Notre Notre Dame does not seem terribly deficient in talent either, they do appear to be coached poorly as a whole.......

Offensive players are easy to get- D wins, No D loses- see USC this year. Weiss had Clausen and Tate in his pocket for 3 years, What was he doing in those 3 years to get D players.? He doesn't know how to select players who like to hit.

I'm a stanford believer, but four losses...no way that qualifies as great...and anyone who knocks gerhart just doesn't know, and their comments should be ignored...nice bowl game coming up...I hope they get an sec or big 12 team...say what you want, after the game..remember the pac 10's bowl game record last season...

WOW it's amazing to read all the trash here! I think I LOST brain cells from it!! I think the Notre Dame program is not bad and that the firing of Charlie Weiss won't solve anything. They actually looked pretty good this year with having a young quarterback. It will take experience to get where they want to be. If you look at the scores this year in the losses, they didn't lose by much and quite possibly could have been the winner in those contests! Hmm....and all that was said from a Michigan fan! Let's just play football and leave the media in Iraq or Afghanistan. I really like that idea! :)

Look, all of you idiots sit there and put down cw but i'd like to see any of you try coaching. It's not as easy as it looks. And just because some priests like little boys doesn't mean they are like that. Notre Dame is one of the most populr schools there is. If you have something to say about irish be an adult and say it . Atleast the irish aren't babies and @#$%s.

    For Maiziesdad

Normally with Einstein like comments such as: They have a national following because priests rape little boys all over the world. That is Notre Dame fans drunken ass rapists don't allow further posts or comments. However since you got away with it. Ohio State got beat by Purdue, and from the information that I am receiving N.D. beat Purdue. For Michigan fans let us not forget Appalachian State (what a powerhouse)

University of Texas is undefeated and #1 in the country interchangeable with Alabama and Florida, that are also are undefeated.

Stanford, Michigan,USC and the University of Pittsburg all have beat Notre dame on the playing fields

Better academics- because they aren't better- is no excuse for Notre Dames FAIL in football.

Hey #432 The difference is the other schools actually beat the teams they water down the schedule with. If Ohio State watered down their schedule with Navy it dosnt say much that the non-fighting Irish lost to them.
