Georgia runs past No. 7 Georgia Tech 30-24

ATLANTA (AP)—Georgia came out running and never slowed down.

When it was done, the Bulldogs had a huge upset that took some of the sting out of their disappointing season, while the Atlantic Coast Conference was left with a huge letdown for a championship game.

Taking a page out of Georgia Tech’s playbook, Georgia rushed for 339 yards to beat the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets 30-24 Saturday night. Freshman Washaun Ealey rambled for 183 yards and Caleb King broke loose for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs (7-5) reclaimed state bragging rights in a tumultuous year and handed the Yellow Jackets (10-2) a huge setback in what has been their best season in nearly two decades. The nation’s second-best rushing team was held to 205 yards—109 below its average.

“It hurts. I know I’m hurting,” Georgia Tech safety Morgan Burnett said. “We were a higher-ranked team, but I think we got complacent.

The loss completed a dismal day for the two teams that will meet next week in Tampa, Fla., for the ACC title. Earlier, Clemson was blown out by South Carolina 34-17.

Ealey and King left little doubt what they had in mind. The freshman had written “I Run” in black under his left eye and “This State” under his right eye. King has the same words written on his arms.

“We had a lot of success (running),” said Ealey, who had already set a new career high by early in the second quarter. “I hope we do it a lot in the future.”

Georgia set the tone right from the opening kickoff. The first 10 plays? All runs, including a 35-yarder by Ealey and a 6-yard touchdown for King.

The offensive line was dominating, pushing around the Yellow Jackets to open one big hole after another.

High-scoring Georgia Tech, averaging 36 points a game, looked totally out of sync throughout the first half and put themselves in another deep hole, just as they did against Georgia a year ago. In that one, Georgia Tech fell behind 28-12 at the midway point but rallied for a 45-42 victory than snapped a seven-year losing streak against their state rival.

“I just wanted to get this game,” said Georgia safety Reshad Jones, who took a lot of heat for missed tackles in last year’s loss. “It was real personal. I wanted redemption.”

This time, the Yellow Jackets went to the locker room down 17-3. They couldn’t make it all the way back.

After Georgia’s Blair Walsh was wide left on a potentially clinching field goal from 55 yards out, only his second miss of the season, Georgia Tech converted a fourth down at the Georgia 46 with plenty of time to run it the rest of the way.

But coach Paul Johnson abandoned the triple option, taking three straight deep shots through the air—all incomplete—to leave the Yellow Jackets facing fourth-and-10. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt, who returned to the game on a gimpy ankle after being injured in the first half, found Demaryius Thomas wide open along the sideline for what would have been enough for the first down.

But Georgia Tech’s top receiver let the ball slip through his hands with no one around.

Game over.

Georgia has been one of the nation’s most disappointing teams, losing more games than it had in any season during Mark Richt’s nine years as coach. Amid calls for him to shake up his coaching staff, the Bulldogs defied their critics and pushed the coach’s record against Georgia Tech to 8-1.

For good measure, the Bulldogs likely improved their bowl prospects, though it will still be a postseason trip below their expectations.

“I know we’ve got some areas to improve in,” Richt said. “Right now, I’m just going to enjoy this victory.”

The Yellow Jackets are still in the same position as they were before the game, knowing a win in the ACC title game likely sends them to the Orange Bowl.

“We need to get over this fast,” Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer said. “We have a bigger game to worry about.”

King was part of an exciting sequence early in the third quarter, when Georgia Tech could have launched another comeback but were instead answered right away.

The Yellow Jackets closed to 17-10 on their third play from scrimmage when Thomas turned a short pass into a 77-yard touchdown. He caught a throw just across the line, stiff-armed Vance Cuff and took off down the sideline for his 10th play of the year covering at least 50 yards.

But Georgia took the very next snap to the house. King got the handoff, blew through yet another big opening up the middle and zigzagged his way down the field for a 75-yard touchdown.

Georgia Tech never caught up. Walsh added field goals of 38 and 43 yards to offset a pair of Georgia Tech touchdowns: Dwyer’s 5-yard run and a 1-yard sneak by Nesbitt.

The Bulldogs had two 100-yard runners in a game for the first time since 2004 and piled up the most rushing yards of Richt’s tenure. By comparison, Nesbitt was Georgia Tech’s top rusher with a mere 41 yards. Dwyer, the reigning ACC player of the year, was held to 33 yards on 14 carries.

When it was over, Georgia got back at the Yellow Jackets for snatching pieces of the famed Sanford Stadium hedge following their 2008 upset. This time, defensive lineman Kade Weston planted a huge flag with a “G” near the middle of the field.

“To see them walk out with pieces of hedges in their mouths,” said Georgia quarterback Joe Cox, “that motivates you to want to win.”

I have heard enough excuses to last for the next six or seven years from Tech fans. Georgia dominated the first half. There were two dropped touchdown passes. Tech had a slight edge in the second half and may have won the game except for the bonehead play calling. My Tech friends complained that their best player was out for almost a full quarter. Hell, Georgia's best player was out for the entire game. A.J. Green doesn't drop passes. Georgia beat Tech without their best player, therefore, Tech fans need to zip it. Get over it. You will win one again within the next ten years. End of story.

Am I supposed to pull for tech against clemson so the Dawgs might play clemson in the "Peach" bowl. That will be hard to do. More power to the SEC and parity. Of the 10 SEC bowl eligible teams, only 2 (Tenn. & UGA) had a non-conference loss (1 each). The bowls will show the true power of the SEC.

To everyone talking sh*t about UGA's record or what bowl they will go to.. ya'll do realize UGA had one of the toughest schedules in the nation (top 15 I believe). So lets put it this way, if UGA had a cupcake of a schedule (like the entire ACC) then they would be going to a better bowl. And don't give me that crap that the SEC has fallen off, because the ACC has never had that liberty.

    HEY RICK Z,

"Next, South Carolina and Arkansas only joined the SEC recently. So claiming their histories is a sign of massive ignorance.

Only pre-cheating Alabama has much of a tradition in the long run. The SEC inbreds cling hard to recent history because they spent a lot of years re-enacting Deliverance while the real teams like Miami, Florida State, and Nebraska were winning titles. "

Really, you want to go there?

    Ok, you nerds like numbers:
5 - the number of times SEC teams have played in the BCS Championship game, 5 - the number of times they won. ACC is 1 win 2 losses, Big 12 is 2 wins 4 losses, Pac 10 is 1 win 1 loss, Big 10 is 1 win 2 losses, Big East is 1 win 2 losses. You can't count Miami in the ACC because they were still in the Big East at the time. So claiming their history is a sign of massive ignorance on your part.

Lets go back and look at National champions since 1936:

    SEC teams have 17, Alabama (7), LSU (3), Florida (3), Tennessee (2), Georgia (1) and Auburn (1).
ACC teams have 4.5, Florida State (2), Clemson (1), Maryland (1) and Georgia Tech (0.5)
I'll grant you teams from the BIG 12 have 18, but the BIG 12 has only been a conference since 1994 and most of these came when the teams were in other conferences, so their dominance as a conference is questionable.
The Big 10 only has 13, Ohio State (5), Minnesota (4), Michigan (2) and Michigan State (2).
    The Pac-10 only has 8, USC (6), Washington (1) and UCLA (1).

So as you can see by the numbers, the SEC has ALWAYS been the dominant conference.

Your team never punts! Not that surprising. You never mentioned it I was simply making a point that all the trash talking was coming from GT prior to the game. I don't give crap to any Tech fans for their loses. I know some UGA people do but that is true at all schools. I can't tell you how much I have heard 45-42 over the past year all because of 1 win. The 7 years prior to last year didn't have hardly as much crap said to Tech fans from UGA fans as the past year from Tech fans to UGA fans. Taking our hedge was bs too. No UGA player would have ever touched your sod had that not happened. It was simply to smite y'all. "Last I checked bantering on these boards is usually between intelligent, rational people, not the teams we all love or hate." What about my argument is irrational or unintelligent? You insulted the Bulldogs by trying to take away from their win. You tried to say PJ didn't try to win that game and take away from the Dawgs. "To call me stupid, blind, not watching the game, etc., etc. just proves the point that you, in fact, lack integrity in victory." Never called you stupid, crazy not stupid, blind, and stated that I didn't think you watched the game because of your statement that we couldn't stop the triple option. Look at your rushing stats. 100 yards lower than your season average. You leading rusher had 41. How is that not stopping the triple option? If your definition is forcing a punt then yes we couldn't stop it. I like PJ's philosophy of going for it as much as he does because they are successful with it and prove you can be successful with it even when tradition tells you to punt it. Never did I make implicit statements like you have done several times in your previous post about my intelligence. You Tech fans always love going back to that though for some reason. You'll be my boss someday? I'm pretty sure you won't because I'm not an engineering major. I'm also pretty sure our business school is better than yours just to set the record straight but I digress.

TO: Stacey Vaughn (163. Posted Sun Nov 29 4:59pm EST). Stacey I am dieheart SEC. I like Georgia (long history of good football tradition) and South Carolina (because of the ole ball coach). When other SEC teams play each other I usually pull for the one with the highest rankings in the poll. I just want the SEC represented in the national picture whether it be Florida, Alabama, etc. When Alabama played Auburn in the Iron Bowl Friday I pulled for Alabama. When Florida played Florida State I pulled for Florida. I always pull for Georgia and South Carolina regardless of rankings.

Hmm...not watching...let's see...the only punt came from who? The Bulldogs.

At what point did I speak for the Georgia Tech team that "they need to learn to lose with integrity"?

Last I checked bantering on these boards is usually between intelligent, rational people, not the teams we all love or hate.

To call me stupid, blind, not watching the game, etc., etc. just proves the point that you, in fact, lack integrity in victory.

I congratulated the Bulldogs on what was a great performance and a spectacular win. They deserved it. I stated my opinion on Paul Johnson's play calling. I never insulted the Bulldogs.

But since I am just a simple-minded fellow who can spell properly and use correct grammar I will bow out of this mindless debate that I should have never gotten involved in.

Once again, great job Georgia, you played hard and you won. I look for this game to be even more heated next season as both teams improve.

Like I said in my previous post (139), what have you done for me lately? Virginia fired Al Groh today after nine seasons as football coach at his alma mater Sunday, ending a tenure marked by his inability to beat rival Virginia Tech.

TO: Mark Richt - The only great win next year is the SEC title and NC game. Beating Georgia Tech will not be acceptable as the only great win of the season. Put Georgia back as a dominant force in the SEC. If it means getting rid of your mediocre defensive coordinator then do it. There needs to be a major shakeup within your coaching staff at Georgia next season regardless of your "one" great win over Georgia Tech. BTW what bowl are you going to this year? The Orange Bowl?

adam wilson2003: I realize what Paul Johnson's philosophy is. Maybe they thought the could get PI or a freebie because they hadn't gone deep all game idk I wasn't on the sideline. I agree it doesn't make sense why he did it. To say we couldn't stop the triple option all night is ignorant or maybe you didn't watch it. 3 points in a half doesn't spell domination to me. True a missed FG and a turnover or two helped but we did stop y'all. We did dominate y'all in every aspect of the game, minus passing. Face it y'all got out played by your rival. You don't get rings for one damn win, unless its the national championship, unless it is important. Joe is exactly right. In the end it all goes back to next year. Blame whatever you want you just need to know how to lose with integrity and win with it. Tech obviously doesn't know how to do that. Good game either way, both teams played tough, Tech got unlucky with their injuries.

Adam- are you for real? which game were you watching? "Bulldogs had not managed to stop a Tech possession all night?" You need to watch the tapes.... and the Georgia game means nothing to Tech ???...which team got ridiculous RINGS made after your slipped up and beat Georgia last year???? Pathetic.... Georgia dominated GT in every catagory last night and you try to rationalize it as the coach didn't care about the game.. he looked pretty involved to me last night....Go UGA and SEC!!!!!!!

GT! HOW COULDYA LOSE TO THOSE PUPPIES?! U GUYZ N CU HAVE SHAMED THE CONFERENCE! THE ACC SHOULD HAVE BEEN 2-1 AGAINST THE SEC NOT 0-3?! I have u know, I won't be watching the ACC championship. Got better things to do, than watching 2 lackluster teams dragging on the field. I think this entire league has fallen to Dukes level. A sad decade for this conference. Time to run Swofford and the rest of his penny-pinchin elitists out of town. No quality bowls= no revenue to pay for better qualified coaches, instead of these no-names or left-overs from other washed up teams outside the conference. Its time the ACC cleaned house.

What time does South Carolina play Georgia for the ACC championship Saturday? LOL. SEC- SEC-SEC HAHAHAHahahhahahah. I like what adam wilson said like Ga. Tech lost on purpose to prove a point geez dude you are from another planet. 2 turnovers cost the game? Prolly the fact UGA shut em down most of the night had a bit to do w/ that. I'm just as shocked as the rest of the world that Georgia showed some toughness. Personally I watched Tenn & UK gimme an SEC game anyday. Clemson proved yet again they are what they are. They used to be tough but long gone are those days

    BenH,

For his entire coaching career Paul Johnson has ran the triple option, Georgia Southern and Navy, and you mean to tell me I am supposed to believe that with two minutes left on the clock he goes to three deep passes because he wanted to win? Why? The Bulldogs had not managed to stop a Tech possession all night, we stopped ourselves with two turnovers, the Bulldog defense never managed a single stop. The previous set of downs was decided by a fourth-and-something end around sweep out of the option. A run. That got the first down.

    We throw the ball why?

I am neither ignorant nor crazy, I know what Johnson was doing. It was a message sent to all those who feel that everything depends on beating Georgia. After the first loss of the season nothing depends on beating Georgia. We are in the ACC, Georgia is in the SEC. Two different conferences, two different schedules.

I will not debate the strength of conferences, the tough, D-1AA teams that Florida and Alabama squared off against say plenty for the strength of number one and two. The denial Boise State received from I'm sure several SEC teams proves their strength as well.

Johnson had no reason to care about winning that game. He's focused on winning the ACC and then winning the Orange Bowl. I remember the dismantling we had last year against LSU and I believe so does Johnson. I do not believe Johnson wants to see that happen again.

In the end, Georgia won, you guys get another year to brag. Good job Bulldogs. As always, see you next year!

You are the same kind of fan that the ones that walked out on the Dawgs are. NON FANS. I will assure you that Johnson felt like he could get a pass interference penalty deep in Ga territory given georgias track record in that Dept and the substitution Ga had to make in the secondary , as a matter of fact thats who jJohnson picked on and would have been sucessful in getting the first down had the ball not have been dropped.Nothing was given to those kids they earned that victory whether you can handle that fact or notnon fan .
