Pike throws 6 TDs, No. 5 Cincy tops Illinois 49-36

CINCINNATI (AP)—Tony Pike answered all the questions six times over.

The senior quarterback returned from a major injury to his non-throwing arm and had a record day Friday, passing for six touchdowns in a 49-36 victory over Illinois that kept fifth-ranked Cincinnati unbeaten.

And now, back at full strength.

“Words can’t describe how amazing this feels,” Pike said.

Cincinnati (11-0) remained one of six unbeaten Bowl Subdivision teams, ranked fifth in the BCS standings. The Bearcats finish their regular season next weekend in Pittsburgh, playing for their second straight Big East championship.

“I wouldn’t say it was easy to get to 11-0, but 11-0 is not going to matter if we lose to Pittsburgh, and the guys know this,” said senior Mardy Gilyard, who caught two touchdown passes and ran back a kickoff for a score. “If we take care of business, the rest is up to the voters and the computers whatever else is out there, to figure out what we do with the postseason.”

Pike had the biggest hand in the latest win.

He hadn’t played since Oct. 15, when he damaged a protective plate in his left arm. He needed surgery to replace the plate, and didn’t start any of the last four games. He got into a 24-21 win over West Virginia for four snaps, and threw for a pair of touchdowns in his very limited role.

Would he be sharp in his return as a starter? Could he take a hit? He answered the questions with one sensational half.

Yes, and yes.

Pike threw a career-high four touchdowns in the first half alone while leading the Bearcats to a 35-20 lead. He was knocked to the ground twice by the Illini (3-8), the second time when he stayed in the pocket long enough to get off an 11-yard touchdown pass to Gilyard.

The Bearcats were a more balanced team when sophomore backup Zach Collaros ran the offense in Pike’s absence. They abandoned any pretense of the run Friday, handing off only four times in the first three quarters.

“We knew we had to throw the ball to win today, and that was the plan all week,” coach Brian Kelly said. “We were going to throw it all over the ballpark today.”

Pike finished 32 of 46 for 399 yards. On the season, he has thrown 23 touchdowns with only three interceptions.

He even ran a quarterback draw to show the arm wouldn’t hold him back.

“It felt fine today,” Pike said. “It feels great now.”

The Illini couldn’t handle a spread offense that’s better than anything they’d see in the Big Ten. Cincinnati had 35 points in the first half alone—as many as the Illini allowed in any full Big Ten game this season.

“Historically, you think about a Big Ten team and the Big Ten conference— it’s going to be a power running conference,” Pike said. “Obviously we knew Illinois is a team that’s built to stop the run. We felt we could exploit some things in the passing game.”

Right from the start, Cincinnati’s playmakers had their way.

“You go into a game trying to make them pass,” Illinois defensive coordinator Dan Disch said. “That may be a mistake against them. We gave up too many big plays.”

Gilyard, the Big East’s top receiver, ran back a kickoff 90 yards for Cincinnati’s first score—the third kickoff return of his career. He also had seven catches for 102 yards, including a one-hand TD catch at the back of the end zone.

The senior became Cincinnati’s career leader in touchdown catches. He had only one while Pike—whom he calls “Pistol” for his strong arm—was away.

“I knew that having Pistol back, running and gunning and slinging all over the place, I knew it was going to come eventually,” Gilyard said.

The Illini had particular problems covering tight end Ben Guidugli, who is primarily a blocker in Cincinnati’s spread offense. He repeatedly ran uncovered through the secondary, catching a career-high six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone.

Pike’s fifth touchdown pass put Cincinnati up 42-20 in the third quarter and tied the school record set by Gino Guidugli—the older brother of the tight end, who watched from the stands as his record fell.

“He was happy because I was part of it,” Ben Guidugli said. “I don’t think he has any bad feelings about it.”

Illinois also got its starting quarterback back from injury. Juice Williams missed most of the last two games with an injured left ankle. He threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, but couldn’t match Cincinnati’s breakneck scoring pace. Williams also became only the sixth player in Big Ten history to top 10,000 career combined yards.

“It’s a blessing,” Williams said. “Not too many people have ever done it. There have been a lot of great players that played this game. I will sit back and enjoy that once my career is over.”

People...People...calm down. To see the strength of schedule go to:
    http://www.tellshowbcs.com/SOS.html
This shows thru 11-23. If you want to look at the strength based on records of teams on the full schedule click on Full at left.
As it stands right now based on counting every team on your schedule (records of teams included you havent' played yet):
    Bama 4
    Florida 14
    Texas 20
    Cincy 52
    TCU 61
    Boise St 95
For schedule strength based only on teams played so far:
    Bama 15
    Texas 26
    Florida 30
    TCU 38
    Cincy 61
    Boise St 97
So if you are looking toward the end of season and SOS based on every team to be played on a team's schedule it looks like Cincinnati will end up having to play a tougher schedule than TCU. As of 11-23 though TCU has played tougher teams than Cincy. All this being said I think that if Cincy and TCU played each other it would be a toss up on team speed and an offense shootout. IF...Nebraska beats Texas I think the BCS has screwed themselves again because I don't see how they could pick and choose between the two as for who will play the winner of Bama - Fla. What do you do if Nebraska beats Texas and Alabama and Florida tie (it is possible after 5 OT's I believe). Does TCU play Cincy for the NC? That would be a double dose of the BCS screwing themselves...LOL!!!
    ROLL TIDE!!!

You misspelled week it is weak moron. TCU is in the MWC a non BCS conference. I doubt the poll voters would put a non BCS team in the NC game as it would prove that their system is flawed. TCU has only played two BCS teams Virgina 3-9 Clemson 8-4 they barely beat Clemson 14-10. Most of the teams they have beat are MWC teams who have a losing record. UC has beat 9 BCS teams and 7 teams with a winning record giving them a stronger SOS.

Keep dreaming porky the only thing I do not like are the opinion polls i.e. coaches, harris that make up two thirds of the vote the computer has it right. The computers do not have a bias. If OSU was in the SEC they would be dead last remember Fl 41-14 I do not think any SEC has been that humiliated by Fl again you proved OSU and the little 11 sucks.

You are the one acting like you are in grade school which is also your highest level of education face Ohio State the Big Ten are not what they used to be. The computers have UC at third and you believe in the BCS so they obviously got it right. Why do you contradict yourself? I ques I will like you go to have sex with the farm animals.

Hey porky when the word troll was used to describe someone who follows someone on the internet with the intent of harassing they obviously had you in mind as you look like a troll. Whoever UC plays in a bowl game they will be able to stay in the game with their offense. If their defense decides to play like they did in September or October they could easily win. As far as playing the weaker teams from other conferences those games are scheduled years in advance. ILL went to the Rose Bowl a few years ago I believe not a winning team this year can not help it. Oregon St. has a chance to win the pac to obliterate Ohio State will finish second in the pac even if they lose. You can try to defend OSU with their history and tradition but history is for the books and tradition more like what have you done for me lately. How can you defend the 1-3 record in bowl games in the last four years I know you can not win them all but at try for 0.500.

Eight teams in the conf., 5 non conf games, they play a weaker schedule easier to be above .500 keep fighting for them though, you cant compare the big east to the sec, or the pac 10 ,big 12 or the big 10 until every team starts playing the upper teams in that conf. I think they will be playing the loser from the sec championship I heard the sec will not agree to play tcu or boise st. because of there draw and what utah did to alabama last year.

Hey tubby UC has only been in a BCS conference since 2005. Since that time they will have made it to the BCS twice in 5 years since being eligible. Being in a conference of 8 teams that is getting more than their fair share. Ohio State I will admit since 05 have gone every year however most teams in the Big Ten do have losing records and seem to roll over the premier teams of the conference. Big East usually is not decided until last week or second last week. 75% of teams in the Big East have a winning record no other conference can say that. Since UC has been a BCS team their bowl record is 3-1 OSU is 1-3. Again you proved OSU not that great in bowl games. In bowl games your team is matched up with a team that is equivalent from an other conf. i.e. #1 big ten will play #1 pac this year last year it was #2 big ten vs. #2 big 12. So it is not as if UC was mismatched to win 3 of the last 4 and OSU to lose 3 of the last 4.

I am for a playoff against conference champs since having one by polls would just have a bias element. For an 8 game have the currant 6 bcs conf. champs and two buster champs. for a 16 have 11 conf champs and 5 at larges who get in by having the best win loss record and tie breaker being head to head and SOS based on win loss record of opponents played similar to what the NFL does. The 8 game is the most likely you can still have the rose bowl, orange, fiesta, sugar on week a semi final the next week then the NC game.

The only reason they have a better ooc record is they play the weeker teams from the other conf, one top team from a bcs conf. penn state and that was scheduled by syracuse. so do me a favor buttcrack get my pork out of your mouth you inbred hillbillie.

I was only talking about this year. I will admit the big ten sucked last year in bowl games except for iowa thats for sure but that's a whole different subject. It's impossible to predict games since anybody could beat anybody on a given day. I guess we will never know who's better until they play each other. Playoffs anyone?

minnesota is a big ten team and beat syracuse. so the big ten is actually 2-2 vs the big east. the big ten doesn't have a good record vs non-conference teams beacuse they have the balls to schedule bcs teams!

UC gave up 36 pts to a team osu shut out. good job

Forget about sentimentality and loyalty to Juice Williams. Let Charest play the last game and get needed invaluable experience. I would think, although being rusty in game situation, would not repeatedly overthrow wide open receivers like Juice did against Cincinnati. Let all the non-redshirt freshmen and sophomores play and give the seniors a short token appearance to say good bye. It's a shame all those Illini weapons were so misused and underutilized this season. Cumberland should have been playing tight end and catching over the middle passes. Benn, Fayson, Duvalt, Scott, Jenkins, Sykes, Graham, etc. didn't get enough good passes thrown to them much less good pass routes. The offensive play calling this year was downright atrocious. No wonder TCU did so well this year, they got rid of a mediocre, inept offensive coordinator and Illinois got saddled with him. Defensive coaches, especially in the secondary, were also incompetent and had horrible game plans and defensive adjustments.

Paul,UC's defense the last 3 weeks has given up 30+ points to offenses no better than OSU's,so cut the crap.UC would lose to OSU simply because our defense wouls shut your offense down enough to win the field position battle, and T.P. and our run game would smash that inexperienced defense.

Hey porky what makes you think I was agreeing with you? The ACC is weak only half of the teams have a winning record. The Big East 75% of the teams have winning records no other conference can say that. The "big" ten only 45% of the teams have winning records. Last year only 14% of little 11 teams 1 of 7 won a bowl. 4 of 6 67% Big East teams won bowl games. I ques the ACC is better than the little 11. The Big East record out of conference is second to the SEC little 11 teams usually lose out of conference. Just this year Big East 2 wins little 11 1 win. Syracuse the worst team in the Big East beat Northwestern Northwestern beat Iowa and Iowa took the OSU suckeyes into overtime. In reality you agree with me. Answer this question OSU could not beat #5 in the pac USC at home. How do you think that OSU can win at the Rose Bowl against number one in the Pac. With the "big" tens poor performance overall as evidence by having more losing teams than winning teams and losing most bowl games in the last 3 years the MAC will most likely replace the little 11 conference in the BCS.
