No. 2 Bama squeaks past Auburn, 26-21

AUBURN, Ala. (AP)—Pushed to the limit and outplayed most of the game, No. 2 Alabama found its championship form in the nick of time.

The Tide stayed perfect with an imperfect 26-21 victory Friday over Auburn, taking the lead with a tenacious drive that was capped by Greg McElroy’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Roy Upchurch with 1:24 left.

The Crimson Tide (12-0, 8-0) didn’t get much help from Heisman Trophy candidate Mark Ingram, but still completed a second straight perfect regular season in the Iron Bowl.

Alabama did it the hard way, falling behind in the opening minutes, but ultimately did its part to set up a 1 vs. 2 showdown with top-ranked Florida in the SEC championship game.

Forget the national and conference championships, the state title almost slipped away.

“The strong do survive but the strong do get their (butts) kicked,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “That was my message to the team.”

Auburn (7-5, 3-5) pushed the ball to the Alabama 37 on the final drive, wasting lots of time and gaining not nearly enough yards. Chris Todd’s final pass to the end zone was batted down by Rolando McClain.

For the second straight day, one of the three teams at the top of the BCS standings as knocked woozy, but did not fall. Much like No. 3 Texas, which held off Texas A&M 49-39 on Thanksgiving night, Alabama found out being a big favorite against an archrival sometimes doesn’t matter much.

TCU and Cincinnati, the unbeaten teams behind Florida, Alabama and Texas in the national title race, are left to hope Florida State can pull an upset against Florida on Saturday that might open the door for them to reach the national title game.

Alabama needs one more win to get to Pasadena, Calif., for the Jan. 7 BCS title game.

Needing one more score to take the lead against Auburn, the Tide called a timeout and switched out of a running play and went to a senior back without a touchdown catch in his career.

“I was yelling at everybody, ‘Put me in! Put me in!”’ Upchurch said. “No one was hearing me. I just had the feeling that I’d be wide open in the end zone. They changed the play.

“Patience pays off and today I’ve got a story to tell.”

The Tide survived a shaky effort by its usually stellar defense and a sub-par game by Ingram.

The SEC’s leading rusher was held to 30 yards on 16 carries and was on the bench for most of the game-winning drive. Saban said he believed Ingram had a bruised hip.

“Something like that,” Ingram said. “I’ll be all right.”

McElroy and Julio Jones took over without him, aided by five runs and a 17-yard catch by freshman Trent Richardson on the 15-play, 79-yard drive that consumed more than seven minutes.

McElroy, who has been criticized at times as a weak link in an offense with a powerful running game, completed his final seven passes for 62 yards. Jones made four catches on the winning drive, three for first downs.

“We didn’t play a great game today,” Saban said. “It’s a great win. I’ve never been prouder of them.”

Auburn fans remained in the stands for several minutes when it was over, some seemingly stunned and others applauding a closer-than-expected game, while a sizable crimson-and-white contingent celebrated. A handful of ‘Bama players later returned to the field briefly.

Until the final minutes, Auburn had supplied most of the big plays and its maligned defense largely outplayed the nation’s top unit.

“You have to love games like this,” Tigers linebacker Josh Bynes said. “It comes down to the end and you find out who the man and who the boy is.”

Auburn outgained Alabama 332-291 and dominated on the ground 151-73. McElroy was 21 of 31 for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was sacked three times.

The Tigers were shellacked 36-0 by ‘Bama last season to have a six-year Iron Bowl winning streak snapped.

“I just told them that we’re not walking out of here with heads down,” first-year coach Gene Chizik said. “We’re a family. We’re a family when we win. We’re a family when we lose.

“Everybody in that locker room that played did what we asked them to do. They fought for 60 minutes in that game. I’m not disappointed with anybody on our team. Nobody.”

The Tigers stunned the Tide by rocketing out to a 14-0 lead in the first 9:18. Alabama hadn’t allowed a touchdown in two games.

Receiver Terrell Zachery raced 67 yards for a touchdown on an end around on Auburn’s opening drive. It was the longest play Alabama’s defense had given up all season by 15 yards.

Then the Tigers recovered an onside kick to set up another score.

Alabama regained its footing. Richardson scored on a 2-yard plunge and McElroy hit tight end Colin Peek for a 33-yard touchdown that tied it at 14 at the half.

“You have to pick your medicine,” Ingram said. “If you want to stop one thing, we have to execute other aspects.

“Coming on the road, down 14-0 in a hostile environment, we weathered the storm.”

On the first drive of the second half, Todd pump faked and hit Darvin Adams for a 72-yard touchdown to make it 21-14.

Alabama had three straight trips across midfield, ending with two field goals by Leigh Tiffin and Ingram’s failed fourth-and-1 run.

Auburn was left nursing a 21-20 lead going into the fourth.

“We didn’t play with a lot of passion, and I don’t understand that,” Saban said. That changed late.

The Tigers had a solid chance to extend the lead after taking over at Alabama’s 44 following yet another defensive stand. But the Tide defense made it’s best stand of the day, tackling Ben Tate for a 7-yard loss and sacking Todd.

That set the stage for McElroy, who must have won over even his most ardent doubters with the poise and precision he displayed as the clock wound down.

Afterward, Saban headed off the field with his right index finger raised toward ‘Bama fans. A fan in an Auburn orange shirt said, “Undefeated, right?”

Saban tilted his head, expressionless, and walked into the tunnel, undefeated again.

I am a Gator fan, but those you think Bama doesnt have a solid defense is not watching them play! Best example was Tennessee, UT Hardesty will be a solid NLF back, and he didnt get in the endzone against Bama.

With that said, Bama has not seen an offense like ours, and its not the same offense you saw against UT. UF will score more points than last year, and Bama will struggle to run the ball, especially if M.I. has issues with his injury. Bama QB will @#$% a sheet storm of pressure.

As for UF being washed up after Tebow leaves, let me introduce you to John Brantley, he has more TD's passes against FIU in 1 quarter than Bama starting QB had in 2nd game of 2009. Brantley will go to Tuscaloosa next year and put up some yards, but we will probably lose in a close game

835 Dave- Thank you.....finally someone on here pointed out that Auburn's whole game was 13 plays and 2 of those plays were 50% of their offense for the day! So for Auburn to dominate the whole game is like, what F'ing game were these Auburn fans watching?!?!? Oh yeah a Florida fan on here actually said that Bama doesnt have the D to stop them......ok this is for you.....CRACK is bad, please seek help and stop using drugs because obviously they really have done severe damage to your brain! Dont worry fellow Bama fans even if Florida beats us this year its over for them after Tebow is gone! There is noone on this planet and noone ever again that will run Meyers offense as well as Tebow did so this winning stuff isnt going to last, well not winning like they are now! Saban will win us another national championship....he runs prostyle schemes on both sides of the ball and thats what top recruits want to go into these days to secure they are drafted! They dont run the spread/veer in the NFL.....well not yet atleast! So #1 and #2 recruiting classes one after another will eventually bring us to the promise land!

Ramma Jamma Yella Hamma Give'em Hell Alabama! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!

Schedule strength as of Nov 23. Doesn't include Florida and Auburn game for Bama so they should move up. Can see at: http://www.tellshowbcs.com/SOS.html
Florida schedule strength is 30th. Bama is 15th and Texas is 26th. Cincy is 61st and TCU is 38th. This is as of Nov 23rd prior to Bama playing Auburn and Florida so Bama will move up. You clowns out there that think Florida played a tough schedule are crazy. They even had one of the lighter SEC schedules. You can come back to reality now.

Florida offensive line is suspect. Tebow has been sacked 25 times while McElroy only 12 times. While Tebow's rating is higher at 160 to 138 touchdowns to ints is about the same 16-4 for Mc and 17-4 for Tebow. McElroy leads on yardage at 2211 to 2166. So yeah Florida...bring the 8 in a box to stop Bama's run...Julio, Marquis, and Darius will have a field day dancing in the end zone.

Post 824 - Hey...what makes you Florida fans so sure McElroy won't beat you...You really think he will throw 2 interceptions when he has only had 4 or 5 all year? I think you better look at Tebow's stats throwing the ball then look at McElroy's stats throwing the ball. McElroy is better stats than Tebow. Y'all just go ahead and crowd the box to stop the run. McElroy, Jones, Maze, and Hanks will light yall up like a LasVegas casino. LOL
Auburn found out about McElroy's throwing ability. Take away Auburn's 1st 9:18 minutes and that score the last 50:42 minutes of the game becomes 26-7. Take away Auburns 72 yard pass and the one run of 67 yards and Auburn has just 193 yards of offense with the spread offense and 7 points. We controlled time of possession 33 minutes to 27 minutes. So yall bring that crap on and give us the spread and concentrate on just stopping our run. We have more weapons this year that you all are ignoring thinking they will just go away.
Oh...and by the way...tell Brandon Spikes to leave that cheap shot crap at home and man up to play football the way it should be played...by men...not little boy sandlot tricks and cheap shots.
    ROLL TIDE!

Winning ugly is a mark of a champion. Alabama was definitely looking ahead to the upcoming battle with Florida. In 1972, when Alabama was defeated by two blocked punts by Newton/Langner and company, Auburn was outplayed all day till the last minutes of the of the tilt. The result was a ugly win for Auburn, 17-16. I commend Auburn for their hard work, and achievements this 2009 season, and I hope they will cheer their Crimson Tide colleagues as they seek an unprecedented thirteenth national championship. Roll Tide! War Eagle.

well, all i can say is, bama nation opted outta the usual turkey for thanksgiving, waited a day and deep fried a war eagle. i know it's illegal to kill and eat a eagle, but what the heck, it was illegal for auburn to win 6 yrs. in a row in the state of alabama. but check this out, the charcoals are heavy now in the state, we're grilling a tim t-bone saturday, and shortly after that, sometime in january, we're putting a cut of meat on the grill from a texas steer called a longhorn

    ---------------------
Actually, Alabama has a 5-2 record against USC.

'Bama has a 1-5 record against Notre Dame (including two bowl losses in a row - 1973-74 seasons). After the 1973 season, Alabama played Notre Dame for the National Championship, 1 vs. 2. Notre Dame won 24-23 and won the NC with the win. Despite having some excellent teams such as the 1973 team, Bear Bryant's boys were in the midst of a 0-7-1 bowl streak (the lone tie was 24-24 with Oklahoma in the Astro-Bluebonnett Bowl after the 1970 season). After Alabama beat Nebraska in the 1966 Sugar Bowl, they lost to Texas A&M, Missouri, Colorado, tied Oklahoma, lost to Nebraska, Texas, Notre Dame and Notre Dame again before finally beating Penn State on Dec. 31, 1975 to win the Sugar Bowl. The streak of misery was followed by 6 consecutive bowl wins.

Phil- I just read the remainder of your post. Well obviously MSU was the better team today, that goes without saying, but why change the subject. First, USC already had six wins and would have gotten an invite to a bowl, albeit a low tier bowl, so your arguement is null and void. I love how you try to change the subject to UM-MSU game. SEC won three of three today vs the ACC, beat the to best the ACC had to offer. Now, Princeton boards need your input, we have football to talk. As for the military, you can enlist now and be an officer (if what you state is true), I am really sure you would do well, not.

Phil you went to Princeton huh? I really can't blame you for coming here to talk football, but, Princeton will get you no haters on this board. As for 24 national titles, ummm, when was the last one? At least you named your team, finally, I kinda doubt thats your school, for you seem much to dense for that. I will admit though I was wrong, I stated the SEC would take two of three from the ACC, well we took all three, lets see, Clemson had nothing to play for or so you say, I guess FSU & GT had nothing to play for either, cmon lets go spin doctor how you gonna downplay these wins. Truth is, there really isnt a damn thing you can say that would make sense. Two unranked middle of the road SEC teams beat the two best teams the ACC has to offer, Florida just smacked their in-state rival. Might as well close the season the way it started, Bama smacked VT to start the year. Just to bad ACC teams want to play Vanderbilt and MSU so bad, it kinda skews what the SEC has done against the ACC the past couple of years, oh well, 3 out 3 for the SEC this weekend, your right Phil, the SEC is really, really down this year. Now since your so much smarter than us, please leave, your stupidity, arrogance, and ignorance really arent necessary. Oh wait, our fantastic military has given you the right to speak freely no matter how senseless you are.
