Huskers survive tough tuneup for Big 12 title game

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—This is why Bo Pelini didn’t want his team even thinking about Texas until next week.

With the Big 12 North title already wrapped up, he forbade the Nebraska Cornhuskers from so much as mentioning the Longhorns, whom they’ll face in the conference championship next Saturday.

Sure enough, the Colorado Buffaloes gave Nebraska all it could handle before the Huskers left Folsom Field with a sloppy 28-20 win Friday.

Nebraska had just as tough of a tuneup for the Big 12 championship game as the third-ranked Longhorns did one day earlier when they beat Texas A&M 49-39 to keep their national championship hopes alive.

“I thought we took a step back today,” Pelini said after the Cornhuskers (9-3, 6-2) struggled on offense and only pulled this one out because of touchdowns on a punt return and an interception.

“It was a very average effort,” agreed Nebraska nose tackle Ndamukong Suh. “I think we were playing hard but there were aspects of the game where we definitely made a lot of mistakes. We shouldn’t allow that. It was just a collective game of small plays where we were right there to make the play and we didn’t do it.”

The Buffaloes (3-9, 2-6) put up a good fight one day after learning their embattled coach would return next season.

Dan Hawkins is 16-33 with four losing seasons, a 2-20 record away from home and a 10-22 mark in conference play since bolting Boise State in 2006 to clean up a program tarnished by scandal under Gary Barnett’s watch.

Although he’s succeeded in that regard, Hawkins has lost games and fans by the bunches.

Many alumni and fans figured the failure to come anywhere close to the double-digit wins and a bowl berth that Hawkins set as his goal this season would cost the coach his job. But athletic director Mike Bohn decided to give him another year rather than a pink slip and a $3.1 million buyout.

“Well, in this economy, there’s a lot of people who are out of a job, so I think anytime you stay employed, that’s pretty good,” Hawkins said. “But, yeah, I felt fortunate to be named the head coach here and I feel fortunate to remain the head coach here.”

After the Cornhuskers punted on their first two possessions, Niles Paul’s 59-yard punt return TD straight up the middle put Nebraska ahead 7-0, and Zac Lee made it 14-0 when he hit tight end Ben Cotton with a 24-yard touchdown toss.

The Buffs cut the deficit in half with Tyler Hansen’s 2-yard TD strike to fullback Jake Behrens. But on Colorado’s next drive, Hansen was picked off by safety Matt O’Hanlon, who scooted 30 yards for the score and Nebraska took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

Scotty McKnight’s 6-yard TD catch made it 21-14, and the Buffs were driving for the tying score late in the third quarter when Suh, the anchor of the Huskers’ defense, pressured Hansen into an intentional grounding call on third-and-2 from the 18.

The penalty backed the Buffs up to the 35-yard line and Aric Goodman missed a 52-yard field goal.

Goodman missed again, this time from 37 yards, after defensive tackle Eugene Goree recovered a fumble by Nebraska running back Roy Helu Jr., at midfield early in the fourth quarter.

After that, the Huskers put together their best drive of the day, a 13-play, 80-yard march that culminated with Rex Burkhead’s 7-yard TD run with 6:43 left that made it 28-14.

Hansen threw a 56-yard TD pass to McKnight on the final play of the game, but the Buffs didn’t get to attempt the extra point. Austin Bisnow, a senior, ran onto the field for his first college play and was set to snap the ball until the officials huddled and waived off the try, citing NCAA rules that no PAT will be attempted with the outcome decided and time expired.

“It’s just a culmination of how we played all day,” Pelini said of surrendering the last-second TD. “We played sloppy football. We didn’t play to our standards.”

Still, Suh said the Huskers couldn’t help but be satisfied.

“I don’t feel it’s a letdown at all,” he said. “We expect Colorado to come out here tough. Their coach stated that they were going to put everything on the line, so we expected everything in the playbook. We expected every last bit of their energy.”

So, now it’s on to Texas.

“We’re not ready yet,” Paul said. “But we’ll start working tomorrow and get ready.”

Finally Hoss something we agree on. B. Cotton is rotten. Watson could go too!
But tell me, why can't Screamin Bo Pelini get Callahan's 4 and 5 star offensive recruits playing to their full potential? The defense has Callahan hold-overs too and look at them. Pelini needs to become more involved in the offense. Could it be that is why Osborne is giving his opinion cause he knows Bo doesn't have an offensive clue other than how to stop them on D?
Also, I am just not sure the Osborne method of a few 4 star and plenty of nobodies will work in this day and age of college football is NU wants to be Elite again. It will work for 9-3 or 8-4 IMO

Way to recount too. I did and wondered where 83 came from but wasn't gonna say anything?

Get over yourself you inbred-goth. For all you cornstalkers who think you have a chance against Texas, I'd like to see you face the music after Texas wins by at least 20.

For those of you that think nebraska doesn't have a chance at beating texas I would like to remind you that everyone else said the same thing in the first big 12 championship about Texas beating Nebraska and what happened the upset thats what nebraska stands as good of a chance as anybody especially with the fact that none of the top three teams has been overly impressive in fact the only impressive teams these last few weaks is Boise St. and TCU. BY the way Nebraska 24 Texas 21 and Nebraska plays TCU or Boise St. in the fiesta bowl

One more thing, I was wrong, there are 83 FRESHMAN on nebraska's roster and another 34 sophomores, my mistake, but that goes even more to show how young Nebraska is in comparison with the other teams in the Big 12.

There is only one direction to go from here and that is up up up!!! As this team gets older look out!!

Again McFly, I wonder where you get this stuff from haha.

You do realize that these current seniors are from Callahan's so called "top recruiting class", right? You might want to go take a look at where they were at in Rival's Rankings coming into Nebraska, they were WAY up there. Just goes to show that development of talent is just as, if not more important than how many stars some numbnut highschool kid has.

If you want to know why Nebraska's offense is sputtering, you first blame the offensive line and that worthless line coach Barney Cotton, and secondly Nebraska does not have a quarterback right now capable of running this offense. Low on talent at most positions, yes, but it is a LOT more than that.

Did nobody notice that bill is back? Aw that's cute "the worst 9-3 team ever" Pretty original too. I guess it's better to be the worst 9-3 team ever with a BCS possiblity than 5-7 sitting at home! Great end to the season bill!

Texas and Oklahoma both have 73; that's SEVENTY THREE freshman and sophmores on their rosters. Plus way better recruiting classes for 2010. Stop trying to spin why NU sucks on offense. Lack of talent and lack of recruiting. Hope they pound Texas on Dec. 5!

Nebraska is good enough to beat Texas. Its highly unlikely, but they can upset them. It all depends on what teams show up to the game. We've seen some pretty unlikely wins last saturday so anything is possible.

    Big 12 north blows... eh?

Nebraska is the second best team OVERALL in the big 12. That's right, check the records, and considering that Oklahoma just beat the only other 6-1 conference record team (Ok St), that makes Nebraska the better team.

Only Texas is better than Nebraska in the Big 12, and we'll see if that changes this next weekend.

And to #93, you are really misinformed...

Nebraska has 83 freshman and sophomores on the roster.... EIGHTY THREE. Also, these seniors are from Bill Callahan's so called "Top 10 recruiting classes", so that should really tell you something. In the glory years, Osborne rarely had a top 5 recruiting class, Nebraska is just very good at developing talent and working together as a team.

Look at it this way, if recruiting rankings meant anything, Texas should have like what, 5 national titles since 2000, considering the national ranking of your recruits that you always brag about. But unfortunately, mack brown is not a very good developer of talent.

Texas has two Big 12 conference titles. Nebraska also has two Big 12 conference titles. Tiebreaker is coming up this weekend. Throw the records out the window, smart fans know that crazy shxt happens in the Big 12 Title game, even if it is a defacto home game for the longhorns and their fans, the second worst fans in all of college football.

Hey people get real. I love NU as much as any other fan and I would kill for a upset at texas. But there is no way in hell Nebraska will beat Texas. Our offense seems to get worse every week and our defense is tired. Nu will have to mount offense in order to win this game and that is not going to happen. Lets just get past the loss as well as we can and go on to the cotton or holiday bowl and pull off a win there. We can look back and enjoy that NU won 10 games with no offense, and imagine where we could have been if we had one.

NU's offense is going to suck for awhile. Of their 14 recruits only 6 are offense if you count 2 listed as athletes going on offense. It is not like their current offense is young. Mostly juniors and seniors. Could if be they just lack talent on that side of the ball or coaching too? Bo being a defense guy had better get more involved in the offense IMO
Texas for example has 20 recruits and 12 are offense. 17 are 4 star rated
Alabama has 22 and 13 are offense.
Hopefully a good showing in the Championship and bowl game will help with recruiting although it may be too late.

There are 3 teams with four losses, Clemson, North Carolina, and Mississippi in the top 25. Oklahoma St. is still 12 after losing to the Sooners and still Nebraska is not the top 25 with a 9-3 record, this sucks.

Went to the game Friday. Suh said it wasn't a good game. This guy is outstanding, he is a game changer. CU had 2 to 3 people blocking him the whole game and he still put pressure on the QB. Amazing, not sure why NU didn't bring more pressure but obviously CU can hurt you passing and definitely has some receivers and a QB, which NU lacks right now. CU has a bunch of good players, poor coaching decisions and it appears lack of a leader on the field on both sides of the ball. It is no wonder CU played close to some good teams. If they can get their moral and field leadership together they could be dangerous. Not sure they have the coach to make that happen. He gets one more year so we will see. The final touchdown was against a lot of 2nd string, zero pressure on the QB all he had to do was stand and wait for someone to be there. It was a good play and Asante was still in but had not looked good for most of the game after getting hammered earlier in the game. NU still has not recovered from the Callahan era, ick. Several of the players are starting to pick it up. If Suh had gotten a little support on the rush it would not have been so close. It was amazing to watch someone so strong it takes 2 and 3 guys to keep him off the QB. In the last quarter Suh was pounding those guys. His stamina is unbelievable, to basically beat 2 and 3 guys in the 4th quarter is unbelievable. If he was on a ranked team he would be a front runner Heisman candidate. If he doesn't get hurt he will definitely be a top 5 pick and depending on who drafts first could be a number 1. Don't be surprised. In the pros they can't triple team a rusher and get away with it. If he is in McCoy's face the whole game it won't matter who his receivers are! Suh is a game changer for sure and if TX can't handle him like CU did look out. 2 of the three turnovers involved Suh in the CU game. NU would have never beat OU if it hadn't been for Suh. Just watch this guy in the TX game and the bowl game. If they put 1 guy on him he will be in the backfield all day. TX may beat the Huskers but if they show up with an NU attitude it won't be a cake walk.

    Post 56 John,

Nebraska is 1-6 against Mack Brown but that being said Texas has had some incredible good fortune to pull out close games. Of the 6 victories Mack Brown has against Neb, 5 of them have been by 4 points or less for a total of 16 points. In all 5 of those close wins Texas trailed in the 4th qtr and in 4 of those wins they had the winning score with 3:00 of less in the game.

Nebraska could easily be 6-1 against Texas so don't put too much into the history. And when you consider how much talent Texas has had over the past 8-9 years as compared to Nebraska the Huskers have really played above themselves in these games.

Texas is a good team as usual, no shocker there. But I think as one poster pointed out Nebraska is a team was interesting this year. They were bad enough that they could not take anyone for granted on their schedule but they were good enough that they could have gone 12-0 up to this point there was nobody that they could not beat.

I would not read that much into the Colorado game, for Colorado each year playing Nebraska is like the Super Bowl to them, they hate Nebraska and seem to bring their best game of season agains the Huskers no matter what the situation is. I honestly thought Neb was going to lose this game.

I am so looking forward to the game this Saturday and I think Nebraska will give Texas a good tussle. I think our defense can slow down or even stop the Horns but our offense needs to have their best game of the season if they want to pull this off.

I would say this game is probably the biggest game for Nebraska in the past 8 or 9 years. On national television (for the 3rd week in a row), for the Big XII championship, in the State of Texas, against the No. 3 team. What this win would do for the Huskers and recruiting would be huge, huge, huge.

To win this game would have to be the biggest win since Neb beat No. 1 OU in 2001.

Good Luck Longhorn fans, we are looking forward to a great, great game in our household.

Texas will beat Nebraska, however slight the score will be; Alabama vs. Florida- well who knows there. TCU is THE best team in NCAA Div. 1 right now, no doubt about it. I hope it's TCU vs. Texas for the National Championship. Whatever the case, NCAA MUST, MUST, MUST create a playoff system in the off season.

    None of this matters.

Different team, different week. People can get consumed in who beat who, week in and week out. Almost like a college football 'food-chain'. The past few years, there has been no identified food chain though; no way to predict outcomes based off previous performances. Good teams play well in big games, but good teams also play well enough to win every conference game; especially in this conference.

This is going to be a very interesting game; the past few years a person could say that the South Winner will dominate the North Winner, but not this year. This may very well be similar to the OU and Texas game played earlier this season. If Texas is looking past NU, they will probably be shocked. As a Husker fan, I would love that.

The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win this game.

I believe he meant 'garbage touchdown' as in, there was no way it was going to affect the outcome of the game. whether you like it or not players will play harder when the game is on the line, and there will always be a little bit of a letdown when you have the game in hand.

That was for all practical purposes a meaningless touchdown and therefore garbage.

    Texas 18 seniors.........

O' Hanlan on Shipley deep is scary. Pass efficiency starts with the front 4. No pressure from them, D backs won't be able to handle Texas's receivers. Saw it yesterday and all season. Of course NU defense can win the statistics game YEA Go Big Red they won the statistics YEA
Again opinions mean nothing come game time :-)

    71. ResponsiblePerson, said: "4) Colorado added a garbage touchdown at the very end of the game, making the score closer than it should have been."
    ----------------
I disagree with this statement. Colorado moved the ball throughout the game, deep into Nebraska territory and subsequently self-destructed with penalties or turnovers. The game statistics are clearly in favor of Colorado. And while the penalty category is not dramatically different, Colorado had three penalties in a row after driving the ball to the Nebraska 7. And of course, the turnover category.

In other words, the Buffaloes had ample opportunity to win the game and didn't come through. Don't get me wrong - penalties and turnovers are part of the game. And I will be rooting for Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game because I tend to favor the legacy Big 8 schools over the added Southwest Conference Schools (the only legacy SWC school I like is TCU, but they weren't allowed in the Big 12..............they chose Baylor instead??????????? So, they are in the Mountain West (and in a pretty good position this season, I might add). Back to the point, it was a close game.
