No. 3 Texas wins a wild one, 49-39 over Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP)—Colt McCoy and Jerrod Johnson embraced at midfield after their Texas shootout Thursday night.

McCoy still has his eyes on a national title and the Heisman Trophy. And if Johnson’s dazzling display was any sign of things to come, the Texas A&M quarterback could be a leading contender next year for college football’s most prestigious award.

McCoy threw four touchdown passes and dashed 65 yards for another score, and No. 3 Texas overcame a huge game by Johnson to wrap up an undefeated regular season with a wild 49-39 win over the rival Aggies.

“What a treat to watch two quarterbacks like that,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “Fans around the country on Thanksgiving got a treat to see two quarterbacks play that well, two offenses play that well.”

The Longhorns (12-0, 8-0 Big 12) have only next week’s conference championship game against Nebraska standing between them and the BCS title game.

For a while, it seemed as though Johnson just might rally the Aggies (6-6, 3-5) to a gigantic upset, opening the door for TCU and Cincinnati to vault into the national championship picture.

“I can’t say enough about Jerrod Johnson,” Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman said. “He’s probably under the radar for what he has been able to do. He managed the game very well.”

Jeff Fuller caught three of Johnson’s four touchdown passes, the last with 7:10 left to cut Texas’ lead to 42-39. But Marquise Goodwin returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and the Longhorns could finally breathe easy when Randy Bullock missed a 23-yard field goal with 3:05 left.

“We were fortunate to come out on top. I’m so thankful to get a win,” McCoy said. “You have to give A&M credit. I thought Jerrod Johnson played tremendous. A&M hung in and fought, and that’s what you’re going to get in a rivalry game.”

McCoy completed 24 of 40 passes for 304 yards and ran for a career-high 175 yards, a splendid all-around performance that could boost his Heisman chances.

The senior star went 18 for 26 for 222 yards with three TD passes in the first half, and his career-best 65-yard run up the middle early in the second quarter was the third-longest rush by a Texas quarterback. McCoy had 111 yards rushing by that point, already a career high.

The Longhorns piled up 398 yards by halftime against the nation’s 100th-ranked defense, but led only 28-21.

The Aggies took a surprising 7-0 lead on the third offensive play, a 70-yard pass from Johnson down the left sideline to Fuller. It was the second-longest play from scrimmage against the Longhorns this season.

Early on, though, the Aggies’ defense couldn’t get close to McCoy even when they blitzed, and he tied it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipley with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

The Longhorns’ defense, meanwhile, had just as much trouble controlling the quick-footed Johnson, ranked 10th in the nation in total offense (293.9 yards per game) coming into the game.

Johnson’s 14-yard TD pass to Howard Morrow with 1:11 left in the half tied it 21-all. The Longhorns hadn’t given up 21 points in a game since a 34-24 win over Texas Tech on Sept. 19.

“We feel we can match up with anyone in the country,” said Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 243-pound junior.

The Aggies left just enough time for McCoy to answer. He threw two passes to Shipley for big gains, then found James Kirkendoll for a TD with 5 seconds left before the break.

Tre Newton had a 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Texas before a scary collision hushed the crowd of 84,671 at Kyle Field.

Aggies defensive back Anthony Lewis and Texas defensive back Deon Beasley collided on the ensuing kickoff, and both players initially lay motionless. Lewis was helped off the field, but Beasley was put on a stretcher. He rejoined his teammates after the win and was given the game ball.

Johnson broke a 43-yard run but then was picked off in the end zone by Texas safety Earl Thomas, his school-record eighth interception this season.

Bullock’s 31-yard field goal cut the deficit to 35-24, and the Aggies took over again at midfield after McCoy started to misfire. Michael spun off a Texas defender for a 16-yard touchdown, and Johnson completed a pass to Tannehill for the 2-point conversion to make it 35-32.

“Our production on offense was almost perfect,” Johnson said.

McCoy had missed on seven straight passes before hitting Kirkendoll on a short route. Freshman defensive back Steven Terrell couldn’t make the tackle and Kirkendoll raced the final 40 yards for a touchdown with 12:04 left.

Just when it seemed as though the Longhorns had put A&M away, Johnson marched the Aggies down the field again. He found freshman Ryan Swope for a 27-yard gain, then lofted a 20-yard TD pass to Fuller with 7:10 to go.

But Goodwin returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, and Texas escaped.

The Longhorns were upset by Texas A&M in 2006 and ’07, but they’ve won twice since Sherman replaced Dennis Franchione as Aggies coach. Texas has eight of the last 10 meetings against its archrival.

This one, however, will go down as one of the most exciting in the 116-game series.

#390 - Because the Heisman trophy is a silly season award based on media bias and BS! Rarely do they award the trophy to the "Best Player In College Football". If they did there would be more defensive players winning it or less successful team players winning it such as the Stanford QB. Question I always ask is where would that team be without a certain player. Stanford would be a losing record team if not for their QB. Florida I think would be in the same position as they are now due to weaker schedule this year. Texas would still be winning their division and top 10 without McCoy. My vote personally goes to the Stanford QB or Eric Berry at Tennessee who without Berry, Tennesse would be 2-10 or 3-9. With him they are going to a bowl.

Question: why should McCoy be considered as the front-runner for the Heisman after the A&M game when he was only the second best quarterback on the field during the game? No one in the media seems to be talking about this fact. The difference in the A&M-Texas game was NOT McCoy, it was the late Texas kickoff return, and the fact that the Texas defense was slightly less atrocious than the Aggie defense. McCoy is just an above average QB surrounded by superior talent. Why not give the award to Tebow or Gerhardt, as they are most certainly the best players and leaders on the field during any given game.

Would love to see Nebraska beat Texas and totally blow their national championship shot. I would laugh so hard I would ache for weeks. Besides, everyone knows TCU is the best team in Texas. Nope, not a fan of any of these teams either. Just hate Texas, like everyone else in the country.

MICK post 387-----------I agree with you. Nothing can take the place of experience, and that is what Jones got this yr for OU. He will come into next season with alot more confidence and knowledge. Few people understand what a young QB has to go through to become "great." Not just the 2" thick playbook.......but all the defensive reads as well. There has never been a QB come into the college game and instantly be able to properly read every defense he sees and know how to audible into the correct play while also calling for the right protection. I wish Gilbert could have gotton more playing time, but he is smart and very capable of leading. Not like Colt has the last 2 yrs........but he will be fine. I do expect a little dropoff next yr but hopefully not much. Our shining light for next yr will be our defense. We will have 9 starters back from this yr where they have been really good. Texas currently has 6 sophmores and 3 juniors starting, so I have to think we can be even better next yr. I also expect OU to be back near the top. But we will see huh? HOOK'EM!!!

herbert e.......Both were very good, but neither were "lights out". Hopefully Colt will improve his overall arm strength and Bradford will rehabilitate his shoulder and both will have great NFL careers. Check out the four star recruit OU has coming next year. Kid's out of Kansas, and he's going to push Landry Jones. See ya later, pal.

herbert e.......I could not agree more. As I said, they are both reat recruits with huge upside. My point was that no backup will come in and play the way McCoy or Bradford has. Experience and maturity are more important in big games than ability. Landry Jones is the perfect example. I hope Colt continues to play well, and brings the prize back to the Big XII. Every game is big, the rest of the season, so good luck to the 'horns. Boomer Sooner.

james.......If Colt goes down, Texas ends up in the same place OU is. GG is a fine recruit with a lot of upside. Same as Landry Jones, at OU. The problem is experience. I didn't knock the Texas qb, for whom I have mega respect. The only bubble broken would be yours, if you really think a backup will ever play as well as an experienced starter like McCoy or Bradford. As for OU's problems, losing Gresham was tough. Losing Bradford was the beginning of the end. The O-line was thin, from the start, but had the starters made the season without injury, the bench would have become more experienced with the rotation system employed by Stoops. Injuries have decimated the OU team this year, worst I have ever seen. I would not wish a season like this on any team, anywhere. Good luck 'horns, bring the crystal back to the Big XII. well, i love to burst your bubble mick: UT's back-up quarterback would start for all but a small handfull of teams in the country this year. Next year, you'll get a better look at Garret Gilbert.

it may look (to the unwashed) like OU folded because of injuries to skill players, but in truth, they were doomed by an inexperienced offensive line without enough depth.

Wow...already talking about Texas vs. Florida meeting? I recall feeling the same way last year. Yes, I'm a Horns fan. Yes, I feel the Horns would've given Florida a better challenge than that other Big 12 team last year. I really can't go out on a limb and say Texas vs. Florida just yet. Colt had a big game on Turkey-day. He accounted for almost 500 yards of offense with his arms and legs. His effort was very Vince Young-like if you want to put it in the "great" category. Ingram had a pretty good day - not his best effort. Tebow has yet to perform. I can only hope that Texas's Defense shows up to play Nebraska. With a win against the Huskers, I'll yell from the top of the rafters, "HOOK"EM HORNS!!! Bring on dem Gators!!!"

I'm a huge Texas fan but I'm not going to praise them when they don't deserve it and the defense was horrible yesterday and mediocre against Kansas. All you regulars on here that wouldn't say a negative thing about Texas no matter how they played only make your comments carry less weight. Even Colt admitted that the defense didn't play well and that the offense had to carry them. Having said that (THANKS JERRY on Curb Your Enthusiasm) I think the defense may have started letting all the good pub go to their heads and the A&M game should bring them back to earth. I would expect Nebraska to see a very angry defense that wants to re-establish its reputation.
