Dixon’s 4-yard TD gives UConn 33-30 win over ND

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—After a string of stinging losses, the Connecticut Huskies finally won one for their slain teammate.

Coach Randy Edsall called the Huskies’ double-overtime victory against Notre Dame the program’s “best win.”

On the other side, Charlie Weis was left to try to explain another jarring loss on senior day and wonder if it will be his last game at Notre Dame stadium as Fighting Irish coach.

Andre Dixon scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the second overtime to give the Huskies a 33-30 victory, their first since cornerback Jasper Howard was stabbed to death last month.

“Jazz this is for you,” Edsall said, referring to Howard by his nickname. “Best win we have ever had.”

Edsall said beating the Irish (6-5) was big, but getting the first win after the death of Howard was much bigger.

“You’ve got to understand what this team has gone through,” he said. “A couple of close games, and then you lose a teammate, you lose a brother, you lose a son, and you’re trying so hard to honor him by winning on the field. We hadn’t done that.”

Edsall said the Huskies will send the game ball to Howard’s mother, Joanglia, stepfather, Henry Williams, and the rest of his family in Miami. The Huskies (5-5) had lost three straight painfully close games since Howard was killed.

“We ended up just making the tough plays at the end that we hadn’t been able to make in some of earlier games,” Edsall said.

The loss was the third straight for Notre Dame (6-5) and will add to the mounting calls for Weis to be fired. Weis declined to talk about that after the game, saying it wasn’t the time.

“Today’s not the day for me to reflect on things like that. I mean today’s the day for me to be worrying about those guys, those 33 guys,” he said, referring to seniors on the roster. “I really feel absolutely miserable for those 33 guys. … I’ll worry about me tomorrow. But I think today I should be worrying about them.”

Notre Dame was upset last season by Syracuse in the final home game of a 7-6 season.

“It just hurt,” linebacker Brian Smith said. “A lot of seniors lost their last game at Notre Dame Stadium. It’s supposed to be a memorable day for them and now it’s not for the right reason.”

Senior tackle Sam Young, who made his school record 49th straight start, walked out to midfield dressed in a suit after the game and stood there by himself for a while.

The Irish led 14-0 early in the second quarter but didn’t score another touchdown until the first overtime, a change from recent losses when they fell behind and rallies fell short.

Edsall said the win wasn’t an upset.

“We knew we could come out here and win if we just went and executed and did the things that our God-given ability would allow us to do,” he said.

Jordan Todman ran for 130 yards on 26 carries, including a 43-yard TD run for UConn. He also added a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD. Dixon rushed for 114 yards on 20 carries.

“Since everything happened to Jazz, we haven’t won one for him. This was our chance to get that one for Jazz,” Dixon said.

This loss was Notre Dame’s fifth loss by a touchdown or less this season.

Jimmy Clausen was 30 of 45 passing for 329 yards for Notre Dame. Golden Tate had nine catches for 123 yards and Michael Floyd had eight catches for 104 yards. Tate set school records for catches in a season (83) and season yardage (1,295) with a 39-yard catch in the first quarter that helped set up Notre Dame’s first score.

While it was Dixon who scored the game-winner, Todman did the most damage. He cut the lead to 14-7 when he made four Irish defenders miss on a long touchdown run in the second quarter. Then when the Irish moved ahead 17-10, he tied it seconds later when he returned the kickoff for a touchdown, racing up the middle, cutting left and going untouched into the end zone.

The Huskies took their first lead when former Notre Dame quarterback Zach Frazer threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kashif Moore to make it 27-20. But the Irish tied the game when Clausen threw a fade to Floyd for a 4-yard TD.

Frazer, who transferred to UConn after finishing fourth in a four-man competition to replace Brady Quinn in the spring of 2007, was 12 of 25 passing for 141 yards and an interception. Frazer said the win was big for him.

“It means a lot to me and it means a lot to this university,” he said. “We won this one for Jazz.”

The loss drops Weis’ career record to 35-26, a .573 winning percentage. That’s worse than the .583 winning percentage of his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie.

The Irish, who usually run out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium, walked out with linked arms led by the team captains and Weis, a show of support by the players.

“It was just us being behind coach Weis 110 percent” Clausen said. “He’s leading the program and we just wanted to show our support.”

I saw your list of top schools and I would like to know what criteria this is from. Is it some individuals opinion? I saw another listing the top 25 schools in the U.S. This limiting it to this country. Notre Dame was CERTAINLY on it.Ahead of them were several Ivy League schools MIT, Stanford, the Citadel, at least one of the service acagamies, perhaps all three, I don't recall, I think William & Mary University of Chicago, Northwestern and a few other's. I KNOW that your list is flawed. Being a Big Ten fan, Wisconsin to be more specific, I can tell you NONE of the Big Ten schools has the reputation for acadamia like Northwestern. It's nice to see Wisconsin listed on your chart at 16, but I will tell you, Northwestern, while not the best athetic school in the conference SURE has a better reputation than Wisconsin, Michigan OR Minnesota.

Bottom line: ND's independent days are over.

No serious coach will take this job while the BCS program is in place. E.g., Why would Kelly leave Big East stud, BCS 5th ranked UC for ND? He's trading down not up. UC can be a contender for the national title for the next five years. ND might compete to win the MAC or CUSA (along with Michigan).

Why would Kelly take the job? Because he's Irish??? Please.

ND needs to join the Big East for football. When they do, the world is their oyster. If they don't, they become Army/Navy.

Shhhhh, quiet down. Please don't mention Mike Riley here. He is OURS!

But, since we are here talking Notre Dame, 2001 Fiesta Bowl.
An overrated #10 Notre Dame team vs OSU Beavers. Beavers BLAST the Irish 41-9. Although this was Dennis Erickson's coached team, it was Mike Riley who laid the foundation. Mike is such a great guy, OSU rehired him after his brief stint as a NFL coach(14-34 with Chargers).

    It's over.
    Finally.
Unless you are over 35 like me, the golden years for ND is a fading memory. Todays youth have many other games to watch other than the monopoly that was when the networks gave us only one game at a time to watch in the 80s/early 90s. Bottom line: If you are an 18 year old looking to commit to a college, why on earth would you choose ND?!? ND can no longer BUY it's way into recruiting and exclusive TV coverage any more. Too many choices for the fans and our remote has voted them off the island. The "tradition" is over and the mystique long gone.
BUH-BYE Irish, its been nice knowing ya, but even nicer to put you 6 feet under where you belong. Too bad your contract with NBC expires after next year and you won't get your $9 mil / year stipend. Good luck getting anything close to that in this new economy with that crappy team. Now you are stuck with Weis and no way to afford buying out HIS contract AND paying another hired gun another dumptruck load of ca$h. The gravy train has dried up with no Mr. Moneybags to bail your sorry ass out.
Grow a pair and get yourself into a conference already! Tired of the fact we have to have BCS exemptions for getting you into a big game. Does anyone realize that "independent" football teams consist of the following: Notre Dame, Army, and Navy. That's it. Even Air Force is in a conference.
    WTF IS UP WITH THAT?!?!?

Which one? - At least you point out that you are a Domer Homer, but I have got to call you on your comment:

"I also should point out the witch hunt that the NCAA has put ND through the last 6 years in their desperate attempt to force us into a conference with bias officiating and poor scheduling. How on earth does anyone expect a fair calling of the game when you put conference refs on the field against a non confrence team with the backround and weight of ND? Of course the calls will go in the conference teams favor 90% of the time, to showcase how badly ND needs to be in that conference. Big east officials on the ground against UConn, Big Ten refs on the field against Michigan AND michigan State?"

Did you not watch the last 2 minutes of the game yesterday? How can you make such a HOMER statement? Did you not hear your own paid NBC announcers question tThe phantom holding call on Dixon's first TD run off the left side of the line? What about the added seconds put back on the clock at the end of the Washington game that helped ND win? You must have Alzheimers!

which one? Sun Nov 22, 2009 10:33 am PST Report Abuse
I have been reading this diatribe of vitrol hate and jealousy, and I finally have to chime in. I bleed blue and gold, I was born in South Bend, I played triple A high school ball in South Bend, I used to run laps in the stands at Notre Dame stadium in the summer. I met Lou Holtz there, and it was my dream to wear the Notre Dame colors one day. I have been a fan of this program since i was old enough to know what football is. That being said, the last 20 years have been rough on us Irish fans. The ousting of Lou Holtz was a mistake of monumental proportions and the alumni and sponsors should be ashamed of the way they treated him at the end. Davies couldn't recruit, and willingham couldn't handle the pressure of the ND spotlight, but they pale in comparrison to the travesty that is Charlie Weiss. I didn't approve of him the day they hired him, i didn't approve of him when he went 10-2 and 9-3 with other coaches recruits, and i don't approve of him now. Anyone can see he is totally out of his element as a head coach. He is a quaterback coach, plain and simple, and as such he is excellent. The improvement Clauson has made under his guidance is obvious, but one player is not a team. The defensive coaching staff needs to be scrapped, and charlie needs to admit he cannot do the job of managing a team, and go back to what he does best, which is producing excellent QB's and let a proven team coach take over, like Kelly at Cincy. I also should point out the witch hunt that the NCAA has put ND through the last 6 years in their desperate attempt to force us into a conference with bias officiating and poor scheduling. How on earth does anyone expect a fair calling of the game when you put conference refs on the field against a non confrence team with the backround and weight of ND? Of course the calls will go in the conference teams favor 90% of the time, to showcase how badly ND needs to be in that conference. Big east officials on the ground against UConn, Big Ten refs on the field against Michigan AND michigan State? Pac 10 refs on the field against USC? When the refs called a fair and unbiased game like the Nevada season opener you saw the results. That being said I have already pointed out the sad state of defensive coaching and the poor results it has yielded on the field. I don't care how skilled a runner is, it shouldn't take 4-5 tackles to bring him down ever. Now i'd like to address the haters out there. The simple fact is ND has consistantly put up better numbers, better teams, and more exciting football for over 40 years, THAT'S why they have that contract for national coverage. You think UConn would call a victory over Pitt the greatest win ever??? ND has been, and always will be a huge crowd draw, and a recognized team. We graduate 96% of all student athletes, no other school in the country can make that claim. Our athletes show dignity and class when they arrive at an opposing teams campus, and we are NEVER embrolied in the petty nonsense and scandals that the rest of the league has seen. Athletes robbing liquor stores, fighting in bars, insurance fraud, anyone remeber Maurice Clarett? So hate and be jealous all you want, bottom line, there is a channel button on your remote for a reason, go watch the big ten network if you don't like us.

I can't stand notre dame, but at least I used to resepct them because they took on the very best in the country every year. I never liked it when they won, but they used to at least back up the arrogance and contempt of the players and fans. In the 80s and early 90s they took on all the powerhouses of the day- Miami, Florida State, Ohio State; they were always scheduling the very best every year. Even when they lost a game or two you knew they were one of the best in the country. Now they schedule soft teams hoping to go 10-2 and they don't have the talent and coaching to do even that. How looked at this year's schedule and didn't think they would be 11-1 or 10-2? And in 2010 they have games against Army, Western Michigan, Tula, and Utah. Are you kidding me, Tulsa and Western Michigan? If you want the respect of the rest of college football you need to start with a tougher schedule.

Fire Charlie? NO WAY! Charlie's NOT Ty Willingham, for Touchdown Jesus' sakes!

Notre Lame's Athletic Department and its Administration will ABSOLUTEY give Charlie ANOTHER ten year contract extension, and NBC will sign up for another ten years as well! That, Notre Shame fans, is what seperates Charlie from Ty...uh, yeah...

And CONGRATULATIONS to King Jimmy Clausen and him ACCURATELY prediciting (bragging? boasting?) that he would lead Notre Lame to FOUR CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! Good work, Jimmy...let's see how your pinpoint Chris Simms impressino or your pinpoint Brady Quinn impression lasts in the NFL

Mike Riley of Oregon State would be a great choice. He gets so much out of his average players. Imagine what he could do with the talent ND can draw.

Urban Meyer might interview, but he'll probably get spooked by the stench of dysfunction that exists under the golden dome. If you listen to Weis speak, it casts doubt on the ability of the Notre Dame athletic director and administrative higher ups to identify a buffoon whenever the affliction is as severe as it is in the case of Charlie Weis. The problem starts at the top: I venture to say that Notre Dame football's ills are attributable to a more systemic, athletic department-wide culture of incompetence than can be pinned on Weis, as idiotic as he is.

Hey Jabba the Weis is going to be fine, after he signed that gaudy contract extention using Ty Willingham recruits. ND, like no other university, has the money to buy his fat ass out. The way he took advantage of those mid-west butt wipes was a thing of beauty. Weis is a great offensive mind. He just can't motivate. He'll take the millions, maybe take the year off and then become a highly paid offensive coordinator in the NFL. 'OL front butt will be laughing all the way to the bank.
