No. 4 TCU moves to 11-0 for first time in 71 years

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP)—Andy Dalton made a bet over the summer with his TCU teammates that he was hoping to lose. Win 10 straight and the junior quarterback vowed to shave his flame-red hair.

The Horned Frogs did and Dalton honored the pact, showing up last week with a pseudo Mohawk and “TCU” etched into the side. But all future bets regarding Dalton’s locks are off.

That’s probably wise given the way No. 4 TCU is playing. The Horned Frogs are off to their best start in 71 years after routing Wyoming 45-10 on Saturday.

The win keeps TCU (11-0, 7-0) in the thick of BCS contention and clinches at least a share of the Mountain West Conference crown. TCU last went 11-0 in 1938, capped off by a win over Carnegie Tech and a No. 1 final ranking in the AP poll. The Horned Frogs have not won a national title since, but they still have an outside chance this season.

All that stands in the way of the Frogs and a perfect regular season is a win over struggling New Mexico next week.

As for getting caught looking too far ahead—dreaming of a possible big-money BCS bowl game—defensive lineman Jerry Hughes said that’s not possible.

“This team has done a great job blocking out all distractions,” he said. “We’re all focused on winning the next game. … We’ve just got to take care of business now. When you start looking too far into the future, things start to get away from you.”

That almost was the case Saturday—at least early.

TCU found itself tied at 10 after Wyoming’s Chris Prosinski scooped up a fumble and raced 98 yards for a score midway through the second quarter. But the tie lasted all of 16 seconds as Greg McCoy returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a score.

Then, minutes later, Dalton found a hole in the Cowboys zone and hit Jeremy Kerley in stride, the receiver taking it from there as he sprinted 45 yards for a score and a 24-10 lead.

In a flash, the Frogs turned a potential scare into some breathing room.

This wasn’t the most polished victory TCU has turned in this season, the team turning the ball over four times. But the Frogs broke open a tight game by scoring 35 unanswered points, and have now outscored opponents 278-63 over the last six contests.

“It looks like we lucked out again,” said TCU coach Gary Patterson, tongue firmly in cheek. “We turned the ball over, but we did what we needed to do today. It could have been worse.”

Patterson reminded his team all week to not let all the BCS scuttle distract them from the task at hand. Except for a sluggish start, the Frogs didn’t.

“Today was getting ourselves ready,” Patterson said. “This group has done a great job of taking the next ball game. That’s why we are at where we’re at right now.”

Wyoming (5-6, 3-4) had just 178 yards of total offense and five first downs against a stingy TCU defense.

Austyn Carta-Samuels finished 4 of 10 for 83 yards and threw an interception. He eventually gave way to Robert Benjamin, who couldn’t move the sputtering offense, either.

“There’s no question that TCU deserves that No. 4 ranking,” said Wyoming coach Dave Christensen, whose team remains a win from becoming bowl eligible. “They are an excellent football team and we knew all along that they have no weaknesses and are very strong in all areas. … It was a tough game.”

Matthew Tucker rushed for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns, while Joseph Turner also scored twice.

Turner was dinged up early in the game when two Wyoming players fell on him, but returned after halftime.

“I had to sit out a little bit and make sure I wasn’t too dizzy,” Turner admitted. “It was real hard to sit out.”

Dalton had a solid day, leading an offense that gained more than 500 yards. He was 10 of 19 for 168 yards through the air, his only real blemish an interception deep in Wyoming territory in the first quarter.

He was even more effective with his feet. Wyoming left the middle of the field wide open, allowing Dalton to run quite a few quarterback keepers and finish with 88 yards.

Dalton then got to sit back and watch the action in the fourth quarter.

The quietly confident Dalton carved his name deeper into the TCU history books. His 28 wins are one shy of matching the school record that Slingin’ Sammy Baugh set from 1934-36.

“It’s pretty cool to be considered with a guy like that. He did an unbelievable job with this program,” Dalton said.

As for the BCS talk, Dalton said he’s tuning it out.

“It’s all speculation who will go and then who should go,” Dalton said. “Each team thinks they should have the shot. We can only focus on the game.”

Horned Frogs are def. real. Anyone that has played football or at least understands the game can clearly see that--doesn't matter who you like or what your thoughts are on the BCS. Judge the team--TCU def. for real.

Last year many people were talking sh*t on Utah and touting the SEC. Asked who will win the sugar bowl, the rednecks rage: "Bama will crush Utah." "Top SEC team vs. Top MWC is not even close -- bama will kill them."

    really? that's what happened?

judge teams on performance. conference talk is dead.

LAND_SURVEYER_FRESNO_STATE proclaimed in regard to my denigrating Boise State's schedule of pipsqueaks: "Texas is weak too, they better from an conference which is recognized but who did Texas really beat? Oklahoma State? Oklahoma? Those were the sorry teams. You just complain too much, just shut up and hope the SEC doesn't destroy your team". Weak compared to whom? Texas' schedule is ranked 56th by Sagarin. Boise State's is ranked 96th. Furthermore, Texas is not my team. I abhor that team and its coach. Furthermore, you gush about SEC. Yet, strength of schedules of Florida and Alabama are ranked 51st and 41st by Sagarin. Not much reason exists for you to swagger regarding their opponents.

My quotation in Post 53 is "Boise State's entire conference is comprised of cream puffs." notbuyinit, thefullmers@yahoo,com, dishonestly changed "conference" to "schedule", so he could lie that I ignored Boise State's playing Oregon. Furthermore, Oregon is the only team even close to being ranked. Boise State's schedule of pipsqueaks confers upon it the 96th strongest schedule out of 119 teams. notbuyinit, thefullmers@yahoo,com, believes that Boise State's defeating one team renders it worthy to play in BCS bowls which otherwise are populated by teams which played and defeated top 10 teams and other ranked teams. I called for a moratorium on lies by advocates of lowly teams like TCU and Boise State. They refuse to cease lying.

Ok TCU has beat 3 ranked teams . Yes they are ranked currently. Texas has beat one , Alabama 2 and Florida 1 . They are #4 in both def and off. They had 3 close games one was at clemson in a driving rain storm and one was in a blizzard in Colorado ie game time temps were below 20 degrees. They have blown out everyone else . They beat the same team this weekend that texas beat eary in the season and tcu scored 4 more points than texas did on wyoming. tcu was pulling starters in the 3rd. Oh and yes tcu has played 1 div 2 school how many has florida and alabama played . These frogs are real . Now if you want history they have that too. tcu has won 2 nc,s DEAL WITH IT!

" HOOK EM HORNED FROGS" Anyone who thinks TCU sucks really doesn't know much about the game. I bleed BURNT ORANGE and I see they are a GREAT team. Also, I happen to live in Baton Rouge, so I watch the overrated SEC every weekend ( & Bama is better than Florida, LSU has the most talent but needs a coach). Funny how most of the haters are SEC fans. By the way, let me apologize for my brothers from Austin who can't see past their own hearts (or horns) to acknowledge your team. GOOD LUCK

Edwardutsa - you are a moron. TCU is solid in all phases of the game - offense, defense and special teams. We "suck" so bad we are ranked among the leaders of all Division I schools in such meaningless statistics as Total Defense, Scoring Defense, Rushing Defense and Total Offense. We are in the top 5 for most wins/ best record for all college football programs since 2005 and have won four straight bowl games. This team can play with any team in the country and if they play one of the teams ranked above them they have a good chance of winning. Go Frogs!

TCU and Texas have one common opponent this year - Wyoming. TCU beat them by 4 more points than Texas and only 4 because they rested the entire first string the whole 4th quarter. TCU only allowed 5 first downs while Texas allowed more than 3 times that, TCU held them to 178 yards offense while Texas gave up 273. HMMM who is the better team?

Congratulations TCU. You should be very proud. I am a Longhorn fan first, A Republic of Texas fan second. I hope you get a chance to play the SEC loser. It would be nice for an all Texas NC game, but a final poll with 2 Texas teams at the top would be even better. Most State of Texas fans would not be trash talking like the SEC. Good luck !!!

The truth is that TCU's only game vs. a worthy opponent was against Clemson and TCU won by 4 and their vaunted offense put up 14 against an inconsistent defense. Oh yeah, Clemson also lost to Maryland. Put any Mountain West in the SEC and they wouldn't win 3 conference games. Jabber all you want but no one is listening, especially the BCS. Go Gators! 11-0 and #1.

Alright guys...posts 53-56...Concerning this Jennifer thing, he or she is the equivilent of a small child throwig a tantrum. Screaming for attention, whether good or bad. Do what all good adults would do. Ignore it's whining and walk away. Once he/she realizes that the attention river has dried up, the tantrums will cease. As he/she's bellowing for attention, simply walk away and remove it's fuel source.

While I mistakenly included Texas in the cupcake scheduling that included UF's game against FIU and Alabama's game against Chattanooga, you focused solely on that without addressing the issue. Typical.

    Wooo

Jennifer got her knickers in a twist.

I didn't "conceal" BSU's schedule. It's out there for everyone to see.

You, my dear, are the HYPOCRITE because you and your ilk are as bigoted as any racist ever was. IF you truly believe you are superior, you should be willing to prove it. Let BSU or TCU into your exclusive club. That's all they ask. You just hypocritically continue to "conceal" your true motives for discriminating against them.

And you are the snarly one. I hope to God you're single, for the sake of any men in your life.

    notbuyinit, thefullmers@yahoo.com, snarled

    "Jennifer Tyler

You are NOT perspicacious; YOU are redundant. The fact of the matter is that TCU, BSU, UofU, BYU, and the rest of the "non-Big Six" schools "feast" at the only eateries to which they are allowed admittance. They would gladly dine on haute cuisine, but are not allowed inside."

notbuyinit declined to explain how all the other teams in Boise State's conference play many strong teams, including more than ten which are or were ranked this year. Furthermore, he and his fellow fools never noticed that TCU and Boise State wail that they can not find any ranked teams to play them, yet they refuse to schedule each other. Why don't they play each other next year?

notbuyinit continued shrieking "It's EXACTLY the same attitude as racial discrimination: "We're superior, so we refuse to associate with you OR allow you where we are." You and your ilk may not be racists, but you are ALL bigots, which is IDENTICAL...BTW, what did UF, UT, and UA all CHOOSE to dine on today? Just because you can use a big word, doesn't make you NOT an idiot."

Someone who is not an idiot would perceive that UT did not "CHOOSE" its opponent today. It played a conference team which was ranked as high as 15th this season. Furthermore, there are three SEC teams which were ranked in top 10 today. Quit pretending that SEC teams have easy schedules if they play a few cream puffs in nonconference games. notbuyinit laughably denigrates teams in Big 12 and SEC for playing a few easy teams in nonconference, but hypocritically conceals the fact that Boise State scheduled 1-AA teams and that Boise State's entire conference is comprised of cream puffs.

Congratulations TCU from the state of Florida. The truly hard task will be convincing the BCS that you are worthy of a BCS bowl, or even playing in the title game being that the BCS prioritizes teams based on their money making abilities. So TCU, team and fans, whatever happens, be proud of your accomplishments and a great season. Best of luck to you guys.
