McCoy gets record, Texas wins Big 12 South 51-20

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Colt McCoy fired the cannon. He banged the big drum.

Then he left the field to chants of “Colt for Heisman!”

There’s still plenty of work to do for the quarterback of No. 3 Texas, but for this one last night in front of the home crowd, he was going to have some fun.

McCoy passed for 396 yards and four touchdowns, earning his NCAA record 43rd career victory as a starter in a 51-20 win over Kansas and embattled Jayhawks coach Mark Mangino that wrapped up the Longhorns’ first Big 12 South title since 2005.

“I always love winning,” McCoy said. “I’m just so thankful. It’s really special.”

McCoy, playing his final home game, improved to 43-7 in his career, breaking the record he shared with former Georgia quarterback David Greene (2001-2004).

Texas (11-0, 7-0) still have a Thanksgiving game at rival Texas A&M left to play before the Big 12 championship on Dec. 5 against Nebraska. Win those two, then it’s off to Pasadena, Calif., for the BCS national championship game for McCoy and the ‘Horns.

“It’s been a long time coming,” senior defensive end Sergio Kindle said. “There’s been a lot of hard work put into getting where we are now. It’s not over.”

McCoy threw touchdown passes to Jordan Shipley and Malcolm Williams and two to James Kirkendoll.

Kansas (5-6, 1-6) dropped its sixth straight, adding to a miserable week and season for Mangino. University officials are investigating Mangino over allegations of emotional and verbal abuse of players, fueling speculation he may be fired.

The defeat only compounds Mangino’s mounting troubles. The 2007 coach of the year is 50-47 in his eighth season. He could still lead the Jayhawks to a third straight bowl game for the first time in school history with a win over Missouri next week.

Mangino said he had no doubt he’ll coach against the Tigers.

“I’m ready to go (against Missouri), but you asked the wrong person that question,” Mangino said.

Asked about the turmoil of the last week, Mangino talked about Jayhawks player D.J. Marshall, who he said started chemotherapy for cancer.

“That’s called a bad week. I’ve had a great week,” Mangino said.

McCoy’s big night and two more games to shine on national television could give his Heisman Trophy hopes a big late-season boost. He has 23 touchdown passes and just missed 400 yards passing for the second time in three games.

“I don’t think we could have scripted it any better,” coach Mack Brown said. “He is in here for a big finish and he was sending that message tonight.”

Unlike other games when Texas was winning big and McCoy watched the fourth quarter from the sideline, he stayed in against Kansas until late to say a final goodbye to the home fans.

With about six minutes left, the Texas-record crowd of 101,357 chanted “Colt! Colt!” McCoy hugged Brown, saluted the fans and pointed at the sky before jogging into the huddle.

Texas then called a timeout and he and Shipley walked off the field together to a thunderous ovation. The roommates have connected for 28 touchdowns.

“They are probably one of the best combinations in college football history,” Kirkendoll said.

After the game, most of the crowd stayed to watch as McCoy and Texas’ other seniors high-fived fans in the front row. The players went to the corner of the end zone and fired the cannon used to punctuate Longhorns touchdowns. Then McCoy pounded three times on the “Big Bertha” bass drum before leaving the field.

“I’ve never hit the drum. I’ve never shot the cannon. It was pretty sweet,” McCoy said. “That was the perfect time to do it.”

McCoy was a redshirt freshman in 2005 when Vince Young led Texas to the Big 12 title and its first undisputed national championship in 36 years with a victory in the Rose Bowl. McCoy’s first win came on Sept. 2, 2006, when he threw a 60-yard touchdown pass on the second throw of his career.

Back then, the Longhorns went to a no-huddle offense in part to keep him from getting intimidated by the seniors on the offensive line.

Texas still runs the no-huddle to keep up the pressure on defenses. Saturday night, McCoy’s fifth pass was a 41-yard scoring strike to Kirkendoll when he lofted the ball behind two defenders as the receiver streaked down the sideline.

Kansas put up some of the best numbers of the season against the nation’s top-rated defense. Jayhawks quarterback Todd Reesing passed for 256 yards. Dezmon Briscoe had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

But this was McCoy’s night.

He connected with Shipley for a score right after he got popped hard on a scramble. The 68-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Williams came on the first play after Kansas had cut Texas’ lead to 27-13.

McCoy did just about everything in this one. He rushed for 29 yards and even punted a pooch kick in the third quarter.

“It was definitely enjoyable,” McCoy said. “A memorable one.”

You must be out of your mind if you think TCU has a better offense and defense. Texas has the best defense in college football. Consider this with your stats, Once mack gets up by a good margin he takes out his starters and muschamp also puts in the second an third strings in on defense and that's why people have put yards up on us and score at the end of the games. If they left the starters in those stats would look a lot different. In no way is TCU better than Texas. Hook em!!!!!

SORRY GUYs TEXAS is a good team, but I don't think they would hold up well againt a power house defense, like ALABAMA FLORIDA or TCU'S. If they do make it past NEBRASKA (probably the best team they've faced all season) , they'll have one of these guys, TCU FL or ALAB -all with top 5 DEFENSES-shred their offensive line and give COLT what he hasn't seen all season! TCU with a consistantly TOP 5 OFFENSE, DEFENSE and the #1 SPECIAL TEAMS, in the face of a low 20's SOS (strength of schedule) facing teams like CLEMSON UTAH and BYU and Air Force, IS DEFINATELY the best team in TEXAS!!
For those of you who say that TCU's confrence is weak, considering recent history the mountain west not only can hang with the big boys, but has a good record against them! (consider UTAH's desimation of ALABAMA in the sugar bowl).

but OK, if is possible to compare directly! well then lets compare apples to apples. Both TCU and TEXAS played Wyoming this year, and both beat them very convincingly, but TCU BEAT THEM\ BY MORE and basically the only reason that WYoming even scored in the game is TCU's uncharacteristic TURNOVERS!! here's the stats quoted from another article on YAHOO.

"The Horned Frogs rolled up 25 first downs while holding Wyoming to 5. (Back in September, the Longhorns out-first-downed the Cowboys 27-18).

TCU held Wyoming to 178 yards of total offense. Wyoming had 273 against Texas.

In the first half, the Frogs threw an interception at the Wyoming 7-yard line and fumbled away the ball at the Cowboys’ 2, or the final margin could have been larger. "

SO COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES or WYOMING'S TO WYOMING'S, TCU has a little more dominating offense, and a way more dominating DEFENSE.
EVEN on one of their worst games of the season!!

SORRY LONGHORN fans STAT'S don't lie.

As far as TX running up the score Saturday, I don't think that's what Mack Brown was doing. What he was doing was letting his seniors play their last game at DKR stadium. Very emotional time for some of those guys. I know it was for me. This was the last time we were able to see these guys on our home field.

    Hoom 'Em

hammer......post#291.......Great post. McCoy is a real class act. This may be the best year ever for "class act qb's". He has had a fine career, as illustrated by you. McCoy, along with Tebow and Bradford, should become the template for all future NCAA athletes. They are certainly the finest role models to come before us in quite some time. By the way, bunch, michael h is a good guy. He doesn't bash anyone, and is rarely a homer.(we all are at some point) He is a solid poster, usually, on the reserved side. I've blogged with him for a long time, and I'm not sure who he follows as "his" team. I think it's 'bama, but I'm not sure. He's a fan of college football, like most of the better posters on these threads. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Boomer Sooner.

You'd have a hard time arguing that the winner of the SEC Championship doesn't belong in the title game, but I think it's still cloudy as to who else belongs there between TCU and Texas. TCU has beaten three currently ranked teams. Texas has beaten one. Of course, Texas has more fans than TCU and plays in a conference with a bit more tradition. And to be honest, everyone knows who will be there if Texas wins its last two games.

I for one hope that Texas loses in the next two weeks for one reason. Their fans will raise a lot more hell than either TCU's or Boise State's ever could and more significantly contribute to eroding the crumbling foundation of the BCS. May the loser of the SEC title game do the same. I hope we can all agree that the BCS is the real common enemy here. It's entirely possible the season will end with five undefeated teams and several other very good teams with a single loss. It's a travesty that they don't all get a shot at each other in a winner-takes-all playoff. Even a four-team playoff would be a vast improvement over the current system. All lovers of college football, to arms!

michael h, michael h, michael...have a Happy Thanksgiving, I hope you get to spend it with your family...too bad we went down this road. You're probably a good guy in person, the internet brings out the worst sometimes. You can stop here.

    or...we can continue.

Although you claim I am so impressed with you, I don't follow your posts.

You say you are so unimpressed with me that you can't remember anything I post.

This is especially evident, since I have told you many times (FACTS) about Mack Brown's style, and Colt being pulled so many times this year (and every year). I even metioned how it hurt TX in the BCS and Colt in the Heisman races...until miraculously someone else says the same thing and you credit him for FACTS and go on to tell us what a GRACIOUS guy YOU are.

"You said TX has no class." Don't back peddle now. I follow YOU so closely I missed the apology to the TX fans. APOLOGY ACCEPTED.

Yet I am so unworthy you have moved on, yet you continue to try to get the last word in, and post about me to other people.

I've noticed I'm not the only one to call you out (FACT).

Even though you call me a "friend" (I'm the trash talker), maybe we can go out and have an internet beer.

Better yet just ignore unworthy me in the future.

I still hope you have a good weekend.

284 - macdaddy - The only things that I have every stated that were negative towards TX, is their weak schedule this year. I have always kidded around with Tony C, who is a big TX fan. Fact is, TX does have a weak schedule this year, so does Florida, so does ND and Boise. So what? I got upset because I saw TX, in my opinion, run the score up Saturday night.

I will repeat, if I make a post, it is always backed by facts. Now if someone wants to discuss schedules, I will be more than happy to do so. Never said anything about Mack Brown, if you can find any of my posts were I was negative about him, please let me know. Tony C is a TX fan and he and I have discussed the schedule situation. Ask Tony C if I have every not looked at both sides of a story. In fact after Tony C gave me information about Mack going out of his way to not run up a score, I apologized to the TX fans. Very few people on these boards would have had the balls to have done that.

I could care less what you, John B or jamme thinks about my image. To be honest, I didn't even know that I had an image.

I have too many friends on these boards to be too negative. I used to stay on my friend richard s about his USC team. I called USC everything in the book! richard s always took it with a smile and agreed with me when I was right and corrected me if he thought that I was wrong. I can never remember richard s posting any trash talk. People like you, John B, jamme and hammer are not like richard s. You thrive off of putting the other guy down. I don't play that game!

As I told hammer, when conversations are no longer productive, it is time to move on. As I did with hammer, I will wish you and the Horns well.

270 - hammer - Dude, I guess that I have made more of an impression on you than you have on me. I just flat don't remember any of your posts. If you have followed my posts, as you claim, you would know that I present accurate football knowledge in my conversations, mixed with good natured ribbing. The only time that I trash talk is with friends or if I am provoked.

My original post questioned both Tx's and Florida's class due to running up the scores against weak teams Saturday. You responded with a reply that was filled with trash talk, anger and no opinions that were backed up by facts. That pretty much set the tone for our conversations. Tony C and a few other people responded with the explanation that this game was not the norm for a Mack Brown coached team. They pointed out other games in which Mack had pulled his starters. I accepted their explanations and I apologized to theTX fans. This evidently didn't satisfy you. You kept up your rampage and name calling.

I have a lot of "buddies" on these boards. We have come to respect each other for the good football conversations and friendships. I have friends that are fans of Bama, TX, Florida, Okl, USC, Washington and others. We have good conversations but more than that, we have come to respect each other.

I travel a lot and while in airports, hotels or in customer's lobbies, I like to relax and post on sports boards. If you ask anybody, they will tell you that my posts are always fair, backed by facts and stats that are secured from doing research before I post. I enjoy conversations with anybody until the conversations are not productive. My friend, you and I have reached the non-productive stage. I wish you and the Horns all the best.

Steve - You have no idea what you're talking about, zero. 40 years ago Texas was college football. Do you not remember Texas winning the 63, 69, and 70 National Championships. And after Colt leaves Texas will do the same thing they have been doing the last 12 years. We had Major, we replaced him with Chris SImms. We had Chris, then replaced him with Chance Mock. Chance Mock for Vince Young, Young for McCoy. Then, we'll only replace McCoy with the National Player of the year in high school from last year named Garrett Gilbert. Florida will do the same thing. Replace Tebow with Brantley (former Texas committ). And so forth and so on. Be prepared for Texas and Florida being at the top for a long time. Boise, TCU, and Cincy will have good teams every now and then, but they won't be able to keep up with the big boys.

brilliant comment, steve! You sure know a thing or two about a "conversation" about a "super-conference" 40 years ago, but I guess don't remember 4 years ago how everyone was writing off Texas after VY left after his junior year and the next QB was a skinny 185 lb. 3-star recruit out of a tiny 2A West Texas town. I imagine you were preaching your same sort of wisdom on the demise of Texas Football then as you are now. 2006-2009: 42 wins and counting against 7 losses. I'll put that record up against any team in the country...including yours. And I'm guessing that would be TCU, Cincy, Boise State, or some other BCS wannabe program. Take my advice and stick to a subject you know about or at least don't post your BS garbage without checking out the facts first!!

    2000 9-3 2005 13-0
    2001 11-2 2006 10-3
    2002 11-2 2007 10-3
    2003 10-3 2008 11-1
    2004 11-1 2009 11-0 10 yr record - 107-18 86 win% - NOW THAT'S A FACT!!
