Tennessee beats in-state rival Vanderbilt 31-16

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has had to reach so far down his depth chart because of injuries that even he wasn’t sure who was on the field.

The Volunteers beat in-state rival Vanderbilt 31-16 on Saturday night playing with a third-string middle linebacker, a walk-on outside linebacker and walk-on placekicker Devin Mathis.

“That’s the kicker, right?” Kiffin quipped when asked about Mathis.

After missing the postseason last year, the battered Volunteers (6-5, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) became bowl eligible with the victory. Tennessee hasn’t missed out on a bowl game in consecutive seasons since 1977-78.

The Commodores (2-10, 0-8) finished without a conference win for the first time since 2002.

Tennessee entered halftime with the momentum, but Vanderbilt had plenty of chances to take advantage of a Vols defense fielding inexperience players and guys like senior linebacker Rico McCoy, determined to play despite having an injured knee.

“We just couldn’t take advantage of some opportunities,” Vandy coach Bobby Johnson said. “It’s a tough way to end the season.”

The Commodores had a chance to tie the game before halftime but stalled on fourth-and-2 at the Tennessee 38 with 51 seconds left. Instead, Tennessee drove for a quick touchdown to go up 24-10.

Vandy’s Steven Stone was called for a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty, and Jonathan Crompton was perfect on four pass attempts. His 16-yard TD pass to Luke Stocker capped the 30-second drive.

“That was a big momentum shift,” Vanderbilt linebacker Chris Marve said. “That just put us down even further, so we had to come out for the second half with an ever larger deficit.”

Crompton finished 20 for 34 for 221 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Montario Hardesty ran for a career-high 171 yards and a touchdown.

The Vols struggled to move the ball in the second half, and Vanderbilt had a shot to pull within four points with about 6 minutes left.

On third-and-goal at the 3, MacKenzi Adams attempted a pass for John Cole in the end zone. The ball bounced off Cole and into the hands of Tennessee’s Dennis Rogan, but a pass interference call on Rogan kept the Commodores’ drive alive.

With a fresh set of downs, Vanderbilt couldn’t move the ball, and Adams took a sack for a loss of 9 yards. Ryan Fowler kicked a 32-yard field goal to make the score 24-16 with 2:54 left, and the Commodores couldn’t pull any closer.

Adams was 19 of 35 for 174 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Vandy’s Warren Norman had 73 yards rushing and 61 yards on kickoff returns. Norman’s 1,923 all-purpose yards broke Herschel Walker’s SEC freshman record of 1,805. He also became the Commodores’ single-season leader for all-purpose yards.

“It doesn’t mean too much to me because I’m not about breaking records,” Norman said. “It’s an honor though, just being mentioned with Herschel Walker. That’s pretty cool.”

Crompton’s third-quarter interception ended a streak of 142 straight pass attempts without one, one shy of Casey Clausen’s school record of 143.

After struggling to find consistency on field goals with an injured Daniel Lincoln and punter Chad Cunningham, Tennessee called on Mathis for the first time this week. Mathis hit a 25-yard field goal and connected on three extra point attempts.

Mathis was a walk-on last season and nearly earned a starting job as Lincoln struggled. He spent the spring semester studying in Mexico and did not participate in the Vols’ fall camp.

Tennessee finished its senior day in style when senior defensive tackle Wes Brown, who’s played with injured knees for the past two seasons, intercepted Adams’ pass and ran 25 yards for a touchdown with 3 seconds left, carrying Norman on his back for the last 5. His teammates piled on top of him in the end zone.

“Everybody was saying, ‘That might have been the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen,’ Brown said. “I felt (Norman) hopping on my back, but I didn’t want to be denied. I wanted to score, and I couldn’t ask for a better ending.”

How do you circumsize and Alabama kid? ..... Kick his sister in the chin!... You bammers are about the most classless POS's fans on the planet. I use to think that title went to Ohio St but your diluisional fans take the cake... making cracks about Kiffins inability to judge character when Saban offered both Nukeese and Janzen Jackson scholorships... A bit hypocritical dont ya think?? Y'all come back around on Dec 6th after Tebow hands you your tails again so we can see all you crying in shame and making more excuses..Bammers give college sports a bad name...

Well, if nothing else I've learned tennessee fans are experts on incest. Must be the years of research at UT studying the natives in the mountains around Knoxville.

First of all, I understand that your lack of reading comprehension played a big part in your post hammer. So let me put it at a third grade level for ya. Alabama is noted for always being on probation. It doesn't matter who is the head coach, the Bama boosters are just a bunch of crooks. When a new coach is brought in, he either gets on board, or he's gone. Oh, and one more thing, you inbred hick, I know more about this rivalry than you and all 4 of the sisters you're bangin. Go to a page where you can understand what you're reading beofore you comment. Better hurry and respond before your time runs out at the library...........we all know that's where you are, cause you have no electricity.....lol

Big orange, how old are you? 12? Is that adolesent BS the best you can do? If you had any sense of history, or any sense at all, you would know that the Alabama-Tennessee rivalary runs in cycles. Tennessee had their run under Fulmer and Bama will have their run under Saban. Oh, sure the Vols may win a game or two, but if Saban stays to the end of his contract, his record will be 8-2 or 9-1. Same goes for Meyer at Florida. If anyone is doing Meth, it's you guys. It's Vol fans who think everyone is out to get them.(Paranoia?) Win the SEC in two years.(Delusions?)Kiffin is the new Neyland, or at least Fulmer.(Insanity?) You guys need check yourselves into rehab.

Oh, and by the way, you better hope Notre Dame don't come knockin for your Mercenary coach. Cause everybody knows he will be out the door. Then Bama will be back where they spent most of the 90's. Since homemade drugs have destroyed most of your memory I'll remind you "Mediocreville", that's in "Sucksass County", in case ya didn't know.

You're just like your brotherfathersister, instead of using that $43.27 you saved last year on new teeth, buy a ticket to the UT Bama game. I know you don't have a car, but since you're all related down there, I'm sure you can get a ride.

Actually big orange, tennessee fans are too stupid to realize the Vols got away with murder(literally) for years under Fat Phil. They're too stupid to realize they've got a spoiled brat for a head coach now. They're too stupid to understand the Vols are just a middle of the pack team now and likely for years to come, as long as Meyer and Saban stay in the SEC. Spurrier used to say, "You can't spell citrus without UT." Well, you can't spell "Music City" without UT either. Get used to it.

Hey train master-bater, you saw all the horrible calls, you're just too stupid to realize it. See, Alabama has lived outside the rules for so long, that you don't even know what they are. The Alabama football program has to be one of the dirtiest programs in the history of the NCAA. You guys are the epitomy of what's wrong with college football. The thing is, most people don't care. If ya wanna cheat, then by all means, go for it. But now your stupid, inbred, meth smokin, possum eatin, outhouse usin, no toilet paper havin, a**, comes in here talkin about UT being thugs. Y'all have to come to our house next year, and you won't have Mount Jello-Pudding Pop to block field goals for ya. So start saving some of that $3.25 an hour you make so you can buy a ticket, and come up for the game next year. The Vols are gonna show you and your wifeisistermother, what thugs really are.

I was at the game last night, sitting next to the small Vandy section, and just wanna say, "way to go MacKenzi Adams' dad"! In case someone on here knows him, or maybe he reads this too. You win the award for "Biggest Piece of Sh*t". First, if you were my father, I would beg you to stay home, or at least not wear my jersey. The sunglasses, fake tan, and enormous earrings were a little much. I can understand that you're 50 something, and going thru a mid life crisis, but come on dude, you look like a Village People reject. Then trying to attack a 70 yr old man, for saying something about your kid? Then you sat there, like a whipped dog, while your friends begged the cop to let you stay. Wearing that get-up already tells alot about your manhood, but you let your friends defend you......lol. Then the crying......lol. You cried! I'm gonna let ya in on a little secret Elton John, your kids team is 2-10. It must be great for him to come home after a tough loss, and have to be the one wiping away tears, and doing the reassuring. I've been to alot of UT and Vandy games, in Nashville, and Knoxville, and Vandy fans have always been really nice. Too bad you had to tag along and ruin it. Take a lesson from your kid, and grow up!

Bama fans support cheating because that's the only way they can win. On the first drive today Bama's defense was bailed out by a phantom pass interference call. BTW, why were Bama players getting free textbooks? None of them can read.

WOW! I watched the game and didnt see all those sorry calls, I guess thats what happens when someone who has no dog in the fight watches a game. It's called perception I guess, there were no missed calls, UT won a hard fought game against an overmatched fiesty team. You should be happy, but your complaining about calls and refs, I dont know what game you watched but obviously different than the one I watched.

Post 6- Alabama had a roughing the snapper penalty called earlier in the day. As for the refs costing UT the game against Alabama, hey go recruit a kicker. The game was much closer than the score indicated, UT scored a defensive TD with four seconds left and Lane acted like he just won a national title. Vanderbilt missed so many opportunities it wasn't even funny. Wildcats, great win, I hope you beat the hell out of UThug and Kiffins band of reject overpaid coaches! I kinda wonder where all the improvement is suppose to come from with UThug, I sure saw alot of seniors playing for them tonight.

This game didn't mean that much, although Vols became bowl eligible and didn't want to lose to Vandy of course. The officiating was horrible thoughout the game, especially a roughing the long snapper penalty, which I have never seen before. Totally changed field position giving Vandy 15 yards and first down, it was 4th down and Vandy was punting. Didn't even touch the guy barely. Stupid call. Then refs then gave Vols a makeup call. Seen plenty during LSU-Ole Miss game also. But even Vol fans who didn't have much interest in this game were livid at the sports bar. If I were these coaches, after the season, I would get a lawyer or team of lawyers and go with my video evidence to Mike Slive's office and demand he do something about it. Not adequate to suspend the crews and threaten the coaches and players, but the coaches need to bond together and force him to make a public statement and do something drastic. They have more power collectively than he does. Their universities need to be behind them, but with all the money involved they may be in cahoots with the league office to keep things quiet. It's a shame really. Tennessee is obviously a better team, Arkansas had a win absolutely ripped from them against the league favorite Florida, Georgia the same versus LSU, and Tennessee again against Alabama, the other current league favorite. LSU was stupid in their play-calling and clock management today, but the officials again did their part, although I am not sure why. I just want the game to be played and officiated equally, and whoever wins then fine. But something has to be done about the officials and the league office. I have called numerous times, get the same line of BS. People who really donate large sums of money to those programs should be very upset, and should flex their muscles about this. I think an investigation by either the NCAA or the government needs to happen. There is just too much money involved.

Amen Brian C. on the sorry calls. Maybe CLK can't say anything about the refs, but all of us should call or contact Slive and let him know how sorry his refs are. See if he has the intestinal fortitude to fine the fans.
